The Hot Box BBQ — Restaurant in Guerneville

This is not the type of barbecue that’s smothered in sauce to disguise subpar meat. It’s not the overly simple meat-and-bread kind of barbecue either. This place is a treat! Better than restaurant quality from this little food truck, don’t let looks fool you.

The menu is small but each option is pretty unique— I had the volcano sandwich, and it was a barbecue masterpiece. Perfectly cooked pulled pork, soft fresh brioche roll, crispy onions and jalapeño jelly made such a perfect combination of flavors and textures. The potato salad on the side was amazing, too, with green apple mixed in. I can’t wait to go back and try their pork ribs, or their Vietnamese sandwich.

The Hot Box is an absolute must for anyone hitting the river in Guerneville this summer, or anyone finding themselves driving Hwy 116. It’s tucked under the freeway next to the mini golf course with the dinosaur out front. Some modest signage by the road will point you in the right direction if you happen to miss the giant...

Everywhere i go, if i find a place that claims to have good pork ribs i will order it off the menu in compared to all the other restaurants around cuz i have tried everybody's ribs. The thing about the hot box is they cook is they obviously start with quality ingredients. They cook their meat low and slow for a perfectly tender rib. The sauce and everything else in the menu are clearly home made, not from a can or from anyone elses copied recipe. It is tangy and spicy, with hints of sweet ripe fruit. If you can find better pork ribs for anything close to this price, please tell me about it; but you wont find it. Read great 4.8 reviews of this place and decided to try. I'd give it 3.2 at best. Ordered ribs - the pork was tasty, nicely cooked and charred. But he ruins it by dumping a quart of barbecue sauce on top, making them drippy, messy and downed in wetness. Yuk! Ordered coleslaw as my side. What an awful liquid mayo mess! Again, way too much saucy mayo. You almost need a spoon to eat this. Finally, and I know this is a little thing, but his refrigerator isn't cooling so my soft drink is hot. Who enjoys a warm Coke? You work in a tiny trailer every day and you know when your refrigerator is not working. Get a new one or bring some ice, don't hand me a warm drink and just say, "it's not very cold."
