What can I say? It’s Shirley’s. If you grew up on Guam, you went here. Even if it was just once. I remember back in the day when the only location was the one in Agana. It was a small place and there was always a wait and always full. This review is specifically for the Agana location, although I’ve been to all locations.
Overall, I give this particular location 4 stars (please see below for reason for by overall rating of 3). Not bad, not exceptional, and I will recommend it, especially if you’re looking for a place that has big portions, can accommodate big groups and is generally a decent place to eat. What I love most is that this place does have a big menu, so there are a lot of choices to choose from. So if you and your part have differing tastes, someone will find something that they’d like. I also like that for the times I’ve been here, our servers have been very attentive and kind. Wait time on receiving our orders after it was placed also came in a timely manner.
If you’re just visiting and want to try a local spot that is a staple here on Guam, this one of the original places to go. It has a good history of providing our locals with yummy meals for a very long time. Although I’ve had many different kinds of meals here, the photo is of the prawns and steak meal and I substituted the rice for fried rice. This meal was delicious as well as huge! I could only eat half that day.
Side note: I’ve been to the other locations and although I’ve never had poor quality food, the service between all locations have been inconsistent. Nothing really to complain about, but mainly having to ask for refills on beverages, or a long time for a server to come out and take orders (both pre and post pandemic, so don’t use lack of employees as the reason for this). I don’t hold this against the company as a whole, which is why I specified that my rating was for my experiences at the Agana location. A 4 for that spot, but a 3 for overall experiences at all locations.
Just go and try. I hope you...
Read moreShirley's is a popular family dining restaurant here in Guam. I still remember the first restaurant she opened in the Harmon Industrial Park before the family established restaurants in Hagatña, Tamuning, and Harmon (different from the original location which they closed down). I like that they serve Carnation evaporated milk to add to your coffee but if you like your coffee black, it's just as good without it. The menu satisfies everyone in my family. My daughter always orders the grilled shortribs, my son orders breakfast (i.e. Portuguese sausage, eggs, and rice) even at night, grilled cheese is what my grandson goes for, giant prawns and grilled mahi for my husband, and sauteed mushrooms and lumpia is my "go-to" order there. I think they're the only restaurant that serves Chamorro sausage which is very good. It's like Spanish sausage but not as salty or greasy. They also offer Chinese dishes that are taosi or sweet and sour based. The waitstaff are attentive and are very good at handling large families. They are also very quick to refill your drinks. I heard that at the Harmon restaurant, they have a secret menu item which is onion steak; one day I'll...
Read moreShirley's is usually my go to when it comes to having a family meal when my family and I are too lazy to cook. On top of that, when we want a cheap and afforadable meal on a special occassion, Shirley's is usually the first place on our list. Depending at which location you go to, it can be very busy. Tamunings Shirley's is usually the busiest. Locals and tourist from Korea and Japan usually have dinner there. As for the one in Agaña, it isn't as busy, likewise with the Dededo location.
What I typically order here is the Chicken cutlet with fried rice, usually averaging around $14.00. My other favorite is the Sea Food Platter which can cost you $20 or more. I don't eat as much so they both can usually feed two people. Other favorites include the New York Steak with the Prawns, which can also cost you $30 and up.
Service is pretty good, but can get hectic when the place is busy, definitely in the Tamuning branch. Be aware that depending at which location you eat it, the food portions may differ. I usually eat at the Tamuning branch and when I ate the Dededo branch, the food itself was different. Aside from that, it is a great place to stop by while you...
