Slates Bakery — Restaurant in Hallowell

I ordered a cake for my work for an important client. We needed it by 12PM the following day, I called and asked if there was enough notice to get the cake and they said they could make it work and be ready by 11AM. They called me at 7:40 in the morning to let me know the cake was ready and I let them know I'd pick it up by 11AM. I picked it up and brought it back to work and it looked terrible. The writing was squished, there were crumbs all throughout the frosting, there must have been a mistake with the writing because they changed the direction of the frosting underneath "con" (see 2nd photo). This was an embarrassment to serve. We called Slates to let them know the quality was not up to par and certainly not in line with the beautiful cakes we've seen on their Facebook. They let us know the owner would call us back and we never heard from them. If it tasted good, I'd at least give it another star, but there was nothing redeeming about the cake or the experience. Was looking for an iced coffee and quick snack while driving through town, and wow! So glad I decided to stop in! The coffee was great, and they had plenty of sweets, and pre made sandwiches to pick from. I was in and out in 5 minutes and came out with a coffee, awesome shortbread cookie, and a chicken curry sandwich on home made bread. I've bought food items from here before and love what I've gotten. From the coffee, which is self serve to the fresh baked goods to made ahead lunch items this is a little gem of a take out cafe. The service there has always been friendly. I recommend it to anyone...
