UPDATE JUNE 2023
We dined in at Sakana, and our entire experience was just great.
The food tasted great, the ingredients felt fresh, and the menu offered extensive choices for every like and taste.
Sakana had a Grand Opening recently for "All you can eat sushi," so naturally, the place gets very busy. Additionally, please note: Sakana is not your usual neighborhood Asian food place: unlike most of the area's sushi restaurants, Sakana closes its doors at 11 pm vs. 9 pm elsewhere. Big TV screens emphasize the difference furthermore.
One more striking difference: Sakana offers regular dessert dishes and doesn't limit its dessert menu by the ubiquitous (among Asian food restaurants) mochi ice cream and sticky rice. Thus, Tiramisu, Bomba Spumanti, cheesecakes and other delicacies are included in Sakana's dessert menu.
As we already noted above, due to its popularity, Sakana manages to keep their prices at a budget-friendly level.
The booth seating is available throughout the restaurant's dining areas. The booth seating is comfortable, whereas the conventional tables for two are rather small and inconvenient.
Service might get glitchy (inexperienced summer job waiters) but is very quickly and efficiently corrected by the senior waiters/managers.
All things considered, Sakana is definitely a 5-star restaurant. We will definitely stop by again, very soon. Unfortunately, we can't rate Sakana any more, for everything was quite average. Our rolls were on a miniscule size, the taste and the preparation, as well as the price, just average. Our Kani salad wasn't great and the portion size wasn't generous at all. The Naruto Roll (cucumber wrapped, no rice) was very bland and tasteless. Our Beef Short Ribs were a tiny bit better, but that couldn't change the overall rating. Again, in the umpteenth time, we came to the conclusion that in Hamilton, only Best Choice Sushi is a right destination for this...
Read moreI have been here twice, and both times had the all you can eat option. The first time was perfectly fine, the place was clean, the menu had a lot of options, and the food was good. We would absolutely have a great opinion of the place if that was all. My visit last night was for a birthday party, where the back room was reserved. This should just be a separate space for large parties so that tables don't need to be moved around, but actually costs a significant amount more per person to use, for the exact same menu and no other perks. When we got there they specifically asked us to use as few menus as possible, because it makes things easier for them. This seemed understandable, so my partner and I put our full order on one menu, shared the menu with the other people at our table, and handed it in. It took twenty minutes from there to get drinks (and we were never offered refills on our hot tea, something that normally any other place is on top of) and another twenty after that for our miso soup to arrive. From there, we saw plates and dishes constantly being brought in, often likely not things that anyone even ordered because no one knew where it should go. In response, individual people kept being offered menus to put in more orders, that lead to even more things being brought out. It took over an hour from our sitting down for two sushi rolls from our order to finally hit the table. At almost the end of the two hour limit, and watching everyone else receive dish after dish, we decided that we were done waiting, and were never actually going to get our food. If it wasn't for a party, we would have demanded our money back, because in the end we paid $100 for maybe $20 worth of food, and some tea that we tepid when we got it.
If you're coming in here for a normal meal, it's fine. However, if you're looking for somewhere to host a party, or want to do something with a large group,...
Read moreThis is a casual restaurant which is absolutely bustling in the evenings. My family came here for their all-you-can-eat dinner and loved it!
The shrimp shumai were by far the best I've ever had. They were delectably soft with the perfect texture and a delicate taste, and somehow didn't taste like shrimp at all. They were so soft, you don't even really need to bite them.
I also loved all of the signature sushi rolls we ordered, which was 6 of them. Given that the all-you-can-eat menu is $31 per person, I had low expectations for the sushi quality, but the quality is exceptional.
The BBQ squid was a big hit for us, and I loved the white tuna truffle. And while not every dish was our favorite, the great thing is that the portion sizes are fairly small, so it's not too many bites to get through to avoid food wastage, and you can always reorder the dishes you like, since it's all-you-can-eat for a fixed price.
Amazing quality food for a shockingly low price. If we tried to buy all these dishes at another local Asian restaurant that wasn't all-you-can-eat, we'd possibly be paying double the price.
The staff were attentive and very kind and friendly, and the music selection was good. It was played very quietly, so it didn’t detract from conversations at all.
The only issue was that the team seemed extremely understaffed. My family went on a Monday or Tuesday night and even then, the place was completely packed, and even so, there seemed to be only three waitresses. With so many people, I'm not surprised that the staff sometimes came to the wrong table with a dish; asking so few people to keep track of that many tables is simply an unfair ask. It wasn't a major issue, though - just a little bit of feedback. It doesn't detract from the experience at all, in my opinion.
But other than that, everything was perfect! I will absolutely be...
