A Pleasant Surprise at Swagath, Hamilton
My experience at Swagath in Hamilton, which I visited based on a friend's recommendation, was a delightful surprise. Initially, I was skeptical due to the images on Google that showed paper plates and cups, which made me hesitant to try this place. However, the actual restaurant setting was far from my expectations - it was a proper, well-arranged eatery with cozy booths and central tables, not a fast-food style setup as I had imagined.
The culinary journey began right at our table with a serving of Rasam which instantly captivated us with its amazing flavor and spicy touch perfectly igniting our appetite. We started with an order of Onion Pakora for an appetizer, while my son opted for the Mysore Masala Dosai. My wife, adhering to a no-onion, no-garlic diet, found a helpful ally in our waitress, Preethi. Preethi's polite and cordial manner, combined with her extensive knowledge of the menu, made it easy to find suitable dishes. We settled on Lemon Rice and Puri Bhaji, both tailored to fit the dietary restrictions.
The Lemon Rice was a standout, offering a subtle lemon flavor enhanced by a potent lemon pickle - a brilliant idea that allows diners to adjust the citrus intensity to their liking. The Mysore Masala Dosai was another highlight, perfectly crispy and accompanied by delightful Sambhar and Chutney. The Thali was awesome, featuring a variety of vegetables that were very much enjoyable, except for one that resembled a Maharashtrian dish I'm less fond of. I passed the spinach paneer to my son, preferring to savor the other elements of the Thali, including the fluffy puris and well-cooked rice.
As for the Puri Bhaji (NONG), it was delicious in its own right, a testament to the kitchen's versatility and consideration for dietary needs. Preethi's service was exceptional, providing a comfortable, homely atmosphere that was both warm and down-to-earth.
Overall, Swagath in Hamilton is a restaurant I would definitely revisit and highly recommend. It offers a combination of delicious food, accommodating service, and a comfortable dining environment that pleasantly contradicts any initial...
Read moreI have been coming to Swagath for 15 yrs. Still three years ago the best Poori Bhaji was served here. Today I decided to go back and was truly disappointed. When I came in i only saw one customer. I didn’t think much of it because it was early for dinner 4:50pm. when the waitress gave us a table. I realized it was dirty so I asked her if we could sit in the next one , me trying to be nice I didn’t tell her why. She rolled her eyes at me. Then she handed the menus. The first red flag was when I asked for a dosa. She said no dosas. We have uttapam. A South Indian restaurant that does not serve dosas! I should have got up and left, but I decided to stay and have my favorite poori bhaji. The orders took forever. How long does it take to prepare this food? There were no customers in the restaurant just me and a woman who also looked annoyed because she had asked for coffee and they took long to bring it to her. By her facial expression she was not enjoying her meal either. That was the second red flag another unhappy customer. When the food came I was shocked to see what we got. The food looked like child portions. One small uttapam with coconut chutney which tasted like coconut oil. The sambhar had no taste it was just hot and watery. They only gave 2 pooris with only one curry when I used to get three plus pickle. I ordered Rasmalai which tasted like cough syrup and the sauce looked like slime It was very unappetizing. A far cry from what I remember eating here. The worst part how expensive it was. There is no way this food is worth $60 dollars. I didn’t protest with the sad decision to never come back. I could have a better meal for less than that elsewhere. I should have gone to Dosa hut. Hoping this food doesn’t make us sick,it didn’t look fresh. I know times are hard many restaurants are struggling to stay afloat. Making customers feel like fools is not going to help. I wish you good luck in your...
Read moreI kept putting this review on the back burner for so long because of how busy I've been but it's really not fair to everyone else who might be interested in eating here. It's been more than 5 months since I ate at Sagat Gourmet but even though it's been that long I can't seem to forget what I tasted that day. I went there out of huge curiosity after watching an episode of Munchies (a quick YouTube search and you'll find the episode in question) and was greeted by Sesha Iyengar. I told Sesha that it was our first time there and that we were super interested in eating authentic Indian cuisine. I told him that we weren't really looking for commercialized or Americanized Indian food but that we wanted to eat home made Indian food. The same food we would eat if we were invited over to someone's home back in India. Sesha agreed and humbly assured us that he could help us but little did we know that he was about to take our taste buds on a journey that would linger on in our minds for months after. From the first bite all I could say is WOW! I felt like Remy from the movie Ratatouille EACH BITE WAS A BURST OF FLAVOR! With each bite and each entre that was brought out, the reaction was the same. All the different spices and layers of flavors complementing each other bite after bite. The food was amazing. I can't help but feel like this place is truly a hidden gem. We aren't from Jersey but if we were we'd be there every week to grab a bite! This is probably the longest review I've ever done but like I said earlier it doesn't do the world justice to not know about this place. Oh and thank you so much Mr. Sesha Iyengar for your amazing hospitality! We can't wait to go back next time we're in...
