I am befuddled with all the five star reviews. I came here once about a decade ago..had the scrambled eggs. I usually like the eggs with Mushrooms and cheese, ham mixed in. Like I make at home. Well..my friend told me about a management change and he has wanted to go back there for a long time. So did I since it was not far from where we live in Hamilton. I don't know if it's me..but it seems the restaurants and food are supbar in Hamilton..like it's kind of thrown together. That's why we usually go to the West side in Hamilton or Fairfield to eat. Even the fast food is better than downtown Hamilton or High Street. Well..we walked into Hydes and it seemed lopsided, like it was going off it's foundation. It sloped downwards. It also didn't seem very clean. No one greeted us so we just picked a booth and sat down. They had just finished wiping down the table because it was still wet and it still had bits of leftover food on it. I kind of wanted to just walk out but stuck it out as I was quite hungry from having to fast. The waitress was pleasant and we were given dirty greasy menus. No water was given to us and it was the hottest day of the year. My friend had the cheeseburger and said he didn't like it. He said the fries were "okay"..but tasted like they were made in old cooking oil. I asked the waitress if I could please have scrambled eggs mixed with cheese, mushrooms and ham. As well as hash browns. When the food came I sat there not knowing whether to laugh or cry. I had a procedure done that day where I had to be on a liquid diet for days before and I was really hungry. I should have taken a picture of the scrambled eggs. The eggs were dry. It looked like they just threw a slice of American cheese on top of it. As well as the mushrooms (not good at all) and about 50 pieces of diced ham on top. Really?? Was this some sort of joke? I just sat there in shock while the waitress said "hope you guys are hungry". My friend only finished half his burger and fries. I finished a quarter of mine and took off the ham as it was way too much. They need to get rid of the cook. The eggs and hash browns tasted bitter like they were cooked in vinegar or really awful, old cooking oil. I had to put a ton of salt and pepper in it..but it didn't make it taste better. It tasted thrown together the way it looked. Just awful. I'm surprised I didn't get sick. Also our waitress never checked on us. Don't know why as we were very polite with her. I asked for coffee with creamer and I just got black coffee and it was cold by the time I could flag her down for creamer..there was only sugar on our table all stuck together in a bottle. If we needed anything we had to keep trying to make eye contact with her just to have her come over. The sad thing is that it really wasn't that busy. We were there at about 3pm. She noticed we barely ate our food but was more than happy to give us our bill which is the only time she came over. Even their coffee was awful. Our bill for two people was over $35.00! And we really didn't have much and barely ate the awful food. They charged us "a la carte" instead of scrambled eggs with a side of hash browns. My friend was even charged for fries with burger. I was given what I thought was a refill of coffee but nope, I got charged for that too. Shame on you Hydes! Worst restaurant in Hamilton..by far. Worst service...
Read moreI created a to go order over the phone, the rep that answered the phone repeated it back correctly, but when I picked it up, they hadn't cut the pieces of pie yet, so I had to wait for that to happen, all the bags were sealed so I couldn't easily check if everything was in them, they did help me carry the bags out to my car... However, once I reached my destination - the receipt was in one of the bags, it had a roast beef sandwich, instead of an open-faced roast beef sandwich. An open-faced roast beef sandwich has gravy over beef that sits on two slices of bread. But instead it was two pieces of toasted bread, with crumbles beef in a little tiny bowl. The 2nd item wrong was the bacon cheeseburger - instead there was a double cheeseburger. The 3rd thing wrong was the chopped steak dinners were supposed to have a side of bread & they were much smaller than they had been since last year. My family & friends used to eat there a lot. But we haven't lately because of the times the restaurant is open doesn't mesh well for when we want to eat. Their meals used to be reasonably priced. I knew their prices were higher, just about all restaurants have raised their prices, but usually they don't raise the price of a meal & then give you less at the same time. I even gave them a tip for prep, but if I had known the order was input into their system differently than what was repeated back to me, I wouldn't have given a tip of $10. The total order ended being with tip $113.xx.... I wish the person who took my order would have been entering it into their system as she was repeating it back to me, because she even said while reading it back, "I can't read my own chicken...
Read moreI ordered the ham steak with French fries and lettuce salad. The ham steak was 2 big slices of grilled ham with 2 grilled pineapple slices on top. It was very good. The French fries were standard crinkle cut fries but were cooked the way I like them perfectly crisp on the outside but did not have as much flavor as I would have liked. The lettuce salad was a basic salad you can buy at the store in a bag with carrot and cabbage slivers in it but the house made 1000 island dressing was delicious, I wish the salad had been bigger. My husband ordered the shepherd's pie with sweet potatoes, coleslaw, and rye bread. He liked the shepherd's pie and the sweet potatoes and said the coleslaw was really good but the rye bread was too sweet for him. We also got a slice of blueberry pie with ice cream. The pie was good even though I'm not a huge fan of blueberries, the crust was crisp and thick the way I like it. I didn't try the ice cream (lactose intolerant) but I didn't hear any complaints from my husband. The staff was friendly and just the right amount of attentive but the window we sat next to was letting a lot of cold air in (it was 35 degrees outside) which made the meal mildly unpleasant. I did like their pos system which allows you to select a percentage of tip instead of...
