I was recently vacationing on Lake Huron and a local asked me if I’d been to Amar Pizza and suggested we stop there on our way home. I was quite intrigued that I was being recommended a place to try that was over 2 hours away from where we were, but stopped we did, and damn I’m so glad we did!
First, how on Earth does this place have an average rating of a 4? The low ratings must be from a long time ago because this place runs extremely well and they have mastered their unique pizza. This place is one to go to and one to tell all your friends about.
We were planning on ordering 2 small deep dish pizzas- a Naga and a Tandoori, but we ended up ordering a large and they were willing to split the pizza in half- which was a cost savings and super nice of them, for the same amount of pizza.
The cashier was super welcoming and friendly and walked us through the menu and I thought her customer service was top notch. We ordered our pizza and were quoted 20 minutes, and it was ready in a little less time than that. The pizza was made fresh and boiling hot from the oven.
Both pizzas belong in their own category of food. They are pizza but they also taste like something else. The components were well mastered- the crust was crispy and fluffy, and tasted a bit like a light focaccia. The flavors were well balanced- not too greasy or spicy or hot- really just perfect. I love the way they chop red onions, it really allows you to get the full onion flavor which I love.
The interior was modest but clean. There was bulletproof glass like other reviewers mentioned. I’m not from the area but the neighborhood seemed safe, just not a white area, and I would have eaten inside if I didn’t have dogs waiting in the car.
They have an extensive of typical and more unique beverages. I couldn’t resist trying the Mango Pepsi, which was delicious.
The prices were incredibly reasonable- I spent $40 that covered four meals. And the pizza was really good reheated too. They charge a 4% fee to pay with a credit card.
I marked this as a place to definitely return next time Im in the area. Thanks Amar Pizza for a...
Read moreThey have the best Chicago style deep dish pizza in Detroit --and that is saying a lot because us Detroiters love our pizza. The crust is thick almost like the sauce is mixed in the folds and almost flakey that I can only compare to the crust of the Peach Cobbler I had as a youth in Alabama. The sauce is tangy. The pepperoni is great. There is enough cheese to resole your shoes with, assuming you wanted to walk on heaven. You will pay for this slice of heaven. The pie is not cheap! No matter what size pie you get you will get exactly 7 pieces, the pieces just grow with the size of the pie. It is like magic. It can make divvying up the slices at work a little challenging.
They also have a unique naga pizza which is their term for ghost peppers (ghost peppers originated in their part of the world). This pizza is very tasty and not as hot as you might expect, as long as you are comfortable with sorta hot stuff. But the pepper taste from the naga sauce is very tasty. It has a great flavor outside of just being hot. Get the default pie with the chicken.
They also have what they call their ghost pepper pizza, which is their code word for hot. If you tell them to make it as hot as possible ... well, I could tell stories. Only get this if you want to test yourself. Everyone needs to eat once slice once...
Read moreGreat food choices all around. Love the Chicago deep dish with just plain cheese. All the varying styles of food are great and I recommend the specialty pizzas too!! Only gripe with this place is they were denying my orders for some time over bs reasons. I called once and someone answered and said “sorry were closed and even if we weren’t closed it’s way too busy for me to take your order right now” which was pretty hilarious but they kept denying orders for even some time after this. Basically they wouldn’t make me a Chicago deep dish no matter if I had a huge order or if it was just the pizza. It was definitely one dude who answered the phone and didn’t wanna make that pizza... he’d come up with some new excuse “we don’t have ingredients” , “we can’t make that right now”. For almost two months I couldn’t order food from the store because of this issue(kept saying we won’t make it), eventually after I complained they finally made me one. Other than that the place is amazing and it seems like they aren’t being silly about Chicago deep dish orders now. Maybe it has something to do with the virus, either way it was pretty annoying...
