My family lives in Quincy- 30 minutes from Hannibal. We only have one Asian buffet in our town and wanted to try a new buffet while visiting Hannibal on a recent weekend. Unfortunately, Saints Avenue Buffet just fell short for us.
The establishment was clean and well maintained with ample seating. It was well-staffed and although the woman refilling our drinks was very nice, the lady at the main counter was a bit grumpy. We can easily overlook service; price and food quality are the way to win our family over.
For 2 adults and 1 6-year-old child our total was $50, before a tip, for dinner hours. This is quite pricey compared to Best Buffet in our hometown, but perhaps the food selection would justify the cost? Unfortunately, no, the food selection was not worth the price paid.
There is a salad bar with fresh veggies and pasta salads (this area, in my opinion, was decent quality). Then there is a taco bar with ground beef, nacho cheese, and watery beans; this area was not high quality- with minimal topping options and the beans were visibly unappealing to the degree that no one in my family used the taco bar at all. And then there's the main bar which had meat choices including fried chicken, meat loaf, ham, and mystery meat chunks (I think pork?). The sides were what had me most disappointed. There was probably 20 sides total- but included in the choices were canned green beans, canned corn, and boiled unseasoned cabbage- all very cheap, low quality items that I hope not to find at a buffet. They did have decent mashed potatoes and gravy, mac and cheese, and bread rolls. The rice casseroles (there were 2) were also good.
The dessert selection was decent with mini pies, brownies, and ice cream available.
My biggest complaint is that the cost did not justify the low quality of food. Replace the canned and boiled veggies with fresh cooked veggies that are well-seasoned. Update the taco bar with nicely cooked refried beans and shredded chicken breast as well as the ground beef. Maybe add in one "quality" meat each night; grilled chicken breast, salmon fillets, steak, etc.
Unfortunately, for price, we likely won't be back for dinner. Lunch prices appear to be a bit cheaper- so we may try again earlier in the day and I'll update my review accordingly if it's appropriate to do so. Right now, though, this place fell short of our expectations and wasn't what our family...
Read moreI was really hoping I would be able to give a great review. Unfortunately I have to be honest. As much as I was hoping for the change to be a good one, it’s not. First off, the price for the buffet is extremely high. I know it was mentioned that it was $1 cheaper than it was as Golden Corral. However, the problem with that is there is not even a 1/4 of the food selection available as when it was Golden Corral. It’s needs to be lowered way more than $1. For an extra $1 I’d go to any Golden Coral over this place any day. No steak or cook on the grill, and if I didn’t know any better, the mashed potatoes and Mac n cheese tasted like it came from KFC. Exactly the Same. The mashed potatoes were stiffer than a board. Nothing looked appealing at all. Not much of a food selection at all, especially for what price is being charged. The vanilla ice cream machine was broke. I suspect maybe they just ran out of ice cream. No honey butter cups out, had to ask someone, the “dessert bar” was basically a few Walmart pies, and stale store bought hard cookies. I called 5-6 times on over a 30 min period and again on our way there to find out the buffet price and I kept getting a recording telling me the number I dialed is busy! After paying the young girl at the register, I asked if we should seat ourselves. She was completely on another planet as I had to ask her 3 times before it registered to her what I even asked! I just can’t see how this place will keep customers and be successful if this is how it is. The ONLY reason I even gave it the 2 stars was because of our waitress Theresa. She was very attentive, very friendly, and kept on top of our drinks, and finished plates. Sad to say, we will not be returning. For the money we spent, we could have gotten so much more and way better...
Read moreMy grandma offered to take me and my 10 month old out to dinner tonight and she wanted Golden Coral, but we were unaware that they were no longer there. When we got to Saints Avenue (we live in Louisiana), the buffet looked very similar to GC so she was satisfied. I went up to make my 10 month old a plate and immediately noticed that almost NOTHING on the buffet looked fresh and appeared to be sitting out for hours (we got there about 5pm). The mashed potatoes were a brown color, the macaroni and cheese was a bit crusty looking on top, my roll was hard as a rock (like it had been sitting there under the warmer for hours) and the bread stick I got was too hard for the baby (who has 10 teeth and normally eats everything). The banana pudding was all liquid.
I will say, my salad looked fresh and so did the fruit. I didn't get everything on the buffet so I can't speak to some of the other food, but everything just looked like it had been sitting there for so long. The only thing I seen them refill was the rice crispy treats and brownies the whole time we were there. I hope this isn't how it is all the time but for that price, I probably...
