If I was giving this restaurant a review based solely on the quality of the food, it would be five stars, hands down. But after several similar experiences, I felt compelled to write a review.
What really holds this place back is the service. I try to give restaurants the benefit of the doubt if there's an off night or something, but after several attempts and discussing it with other local customers, we pretty much know that there will be some kind of problem with the service. We go in almost expecting it, hoping to be pleasantly surprised.
My family (usually 4 or 5 of us) tends to sit down in the restaurant itself. Every time we've gone, at least one of our orders has been messed up. Not only that, the staff have argued with us at times when we said the order was incorrect (i.e. serving a burger instead of a chicken sandwich, just not giving us fries, etc.). Because of their app-based system for payment, we rarely get printed receipts breaking down our order, which makes defending our order harder to do.
Then there is the wait time. We recently went one night. Now, I do not mind at all if the food preparation takes a little longer when it's good. There were five of us there, and the restaurant was not crowded at all. We saw people who placed takeout orders after us leave before us. I saw most of our orders sitting under the heat lamps for a full ten minutes, and while the staff played on their phones and joked around with one another, no one checked to see how we were doing. Apparently, they were waiting on one plain grilled chicken sandwich, but I don't understand why we didn't receive an update or why someone didn't ask if the rest of the food could be brought out. After all that, my fried pickle burger only had regular pickles (believe me, it makes a difference), but I didn't feel like arguing about it.
Here's the thing: I know you can do better. I go to the David and Sons location in Swedesboro and never once have I had the issues I've had here. That leads me to believe that either the staff employed here aren't receiving the type of training or there is some other logistical thing holding you back.
When I have discussed this restaurant with other local friends, they all said the same thing: The food is great, the service is terrible. That's across the board.
You have an excellent menu. You have quality food. You have a great location in South Jersey in an area that desperately needed more eating options. The only thing holding you back is yourselves. Train the staff better, stay on top of orders, strive for accuracy, don't argue with customers if you messed something up, and I guarantee that you will become a destination restaurant for people all...
Read moreMy brother has visited this BBQ joint a few times and has raved about it. So we joined him for an early dinner on Sunday. I had read the reviews and didn't know which camp was telling the truth. So here's mine... I can honestly say that if portion size were the lone determinant, then D&S would get a 5. However, there are other categories.
TASTE & EXECUTION - To start, we (4 of us) ordered the BBQ Nachos. Our waitress (and kitchen) accommodated my request for a three meat sampler on the nachos. The meats were good, but the construction of hand-made chips, meats, cheese (lots of it), and black bean salsa made you reconstruct every bite. The cheese congealed on the meat so much so that when a single chip was extracted from the pile, that's all one got. You had to construct your bite each time. Delicious, but tedious. Portion size: gigantic. It almost ended the meal right there. But we wanted to taste the BBQ talents and figured we could box whatever we didn't eat. My wife and I split the 3 Meat Combo Platter w/ 2 sides (Cole Slaw & Corn Bread). The brisket was so overdone and dry. The bark was there but was falling off. There was a smoke flavor, but no smoke ring. The ribs were also dry and, to me, almost inedible. A smoke ring was present though. My wife was able to get one that was edible. The smoke chicken wings were moist, but had a dry rub that leaned heavy to the sweet side. The cole slaw was swimming in it's own juice and was in dire need of salt and seasonings. Hoping to be saved by the corn bread, it too was over-baked and could only be saved by the honey butter. My brother and partner seemed to enjoy their meals. My brother ordered the Crispy Shrimp Po' Boy. Large sandwich with large amount of commercial fried shrimp on top of slaw, insipid (light pink) tomatoes and mayo. His partner ordered the Big Mama Sandwich which had a duo of BBQ meats topped with Mac n' Cheese. A huge mess of a sandwich, but looked decent enough. Each of them only finished a portion of their order. Again, portion sizes were huge. PRICE - This is where the disconnect occurs. The prices, even taking into account for the portion size, were out of scale with the value. My brother hid the bill from me, but I'm sure it cleared $200. There were many items on the menu were intriguing, but I'm afraid that I won't be able to comment on them. Other notes: Brother also ordered three donuts (HUGE!) to go. There was no way that a normal human could eat there AND have a donut. It is BYOB. So bring your favorite...
Read moreI gave this place many many tries bc I love the antique store so much, and it’s close by my family. I’d like to start out by saying the lights dangling are cute but anyone over 5foot would hit their head on them lol like my dad. The third time I came I watched an older women dodge it by an inch. Every time I come I feel like I’m a burden to be waited on and the service could definitely be better! I’ve tried different items on the menu every time I went and for me the safest option is the fries. The fried pickles just have the breading falling right off them when you try to eat them and the pickles are not sliced just long big pieces. I don’t mind them not being sliced more so the fact the breading might as well come on the side bc it does not stay. Same thing with the chicken tenders that I ordered a few days ago and the chicken was like rubber I had to spit it out bc I could not chew it to swallow! Maybe they gave me the wrong cut off chicken but it made me severely sick afterwards. Before I even order I asked the price bc it said 5 tenders for 12.99 then the waiter said “it’s 14.99 they just never updated the menu”. But rudely said last time I came I payed 12.99 when I told her last time it seemed high too me but I’m rlly not so sure considering it was super overpriced! It’s not hard to make up a new menu too make sure your costumers know how much they are going to pay and if it was a different price tell me beforehand!!! Out of the five tenders I had I could only eat 1.5 and they still charged me for 3 tenders. Another time I ordered a salmon bowl with rice the avocado was not even ripe it was like chewing on cardboard and it was drenched in oil. The potato salad is pretty good but the bacon seemed slightly undercooked too me it was kind of chewy. The brisket sandwich was a bit dry/missing something, the plus was it was filled to the brim with meat. It was so heavy if you threw it at someone you’d knock them out. I’d rather spend my money on a Amish market dinner platter down the road platter for 10$ and not be disappointed ever again! This place is full of potential wish too see and taste better in the future. But for now I’ll go to antique store and walk...
