It saddens me to write this review. Ever since Bogie’s expanded their dining room the quality of food has declined rapidly. They have stopped making most hot sandwich items (but still show on the menu). The other day I went in to ordered the meatloaf and gravy sandwich and was told they do not make it anymore, then I proceeded to order a roast beef and gravy sandwich and was told they do not make it anymore, then I tried an eggplant parmigiana sandwich...and guess what... they do not make it anymore (it is sad because it was our family’s Good Friday meal). I finally landed on a meatball parmigiana sandwich, sadly it was not as good as it use to be. The sauce was so watery that it made the bread soggy and it was falling apart as I was eating it and the cheese was semi-melted on it. While I was sitting in the dining room waiting for our number to be called for our food (food to be ready to pick up at counter) three people came in and ordered some of the hot sandwiches only to be told they do not make them any more. Needless to say the customers just left. My husband ordered a chicken cutlet sandwich, his sandwich came out tasting like fish. I guess they don’t change the oil in the deep fryer that often. I wish Bogie’s would have stayed true to themselves and not changed what they were good at. Expanding the dining room was a very smart move. The addition of a pizza oven was nice too. Their ice cream‘s are very good however, they are not selling them enough and when you get a scoop you can tell they have been sitting quite a while. They have that gummy freezer burnt flavor (maybe try pushing the plastic wrap right on top of the surface). I hope they consider bringing back some of their popular hot food items. They definitely are losing good repeat customers...
Read moreI recently visited a local sandwich spot that had come highly recommended, and I must say, my experience was far from what I had anticipated. The moment I stepped in, the ambiance seemed off; usually when I enter a small establishment I’m greeted by one of the employees this was not the case. The service was lackluster at best. I stood there for a minute and looked at the menu and proceeded to ask the women behind the counter a question and before I could, I’m assuming the owner said hey don’t talk to them you need to come talk to me. Ok, no problem. After a few seconds after talking to the people in the back and talking on the phone, I asked could the owner could be make me a veggie sandwich and in return I received a dumbfounded look. The options were explained with such a lack of enthusiasm, as if I was bothering him. He tried to make small talk and crack a few jokes, which I wasn’t too pleased with. Then came the sandwich, for almost $23 the supposed star of the show to call it a disappointment would be an understatement. The bread, was probably the best part of the sandwich, unfortunately it was overshadowed by an overwhelming amount of shredded lettuce. I left feeling not only dissatisfied but also disheartened, for both my taste buds and my wallet. In conclusion, this was a letdown of a sandwich that I would not recommend. One can only hope that this establishment takes its feedback to heart and strives to reach the heights that its...
Read moreDid one know that May 5 is National Hoagie Day?
A hoagie is a bread roll sandwich piled high with deli meats, cheese, fixings, and dressing, and is usually at least six inches long. The term ‘hoagie’ is most commonly used in Philadelphia and South Jersey. They are usually served cold because of their association with Italian American culture.
Located on Lafayette Avenue in Hawthorne, this iconic establishment is an award-winning sandwich shop where locals know it for their large and filling sandwiches.
Upon entering Bogie’s Hoagies & Deli, my partner and I knew right away this was going to be a nice lunch spot as we were greeted by the staff and a huge deli selection menu. Besides sandwiches, they have pizza cooked inside a brick oven.
We decided on the Meatball Marinara and Honey Turkey 1/2 size hoagies after comparing the sizes.
The Honey Turkey packed a punch with the meat, lettuce, canned sweet peppers, tomatoes, onion, provolone cheese, mayonnaise, and oil & vinegar. The meal was tasty, and well seasoned. However, with the bread being thinner, it made the meatball sandwich soggy and fell apart. Even with the half size, we took the sandwich home. The price was reasonable. The service was quick, and the staff was friendly and accommodating.
I was told by the staff that size does matter for a sandwich, and this place did not disappoint as first-timers, which we...
