Locals with limited choices and US Highway 431 travelers provide steady business for this typical southeastern U.S. style of "Mexican" food. As a guest and visitor, I ordered various dishes at Hasienda Azul Headland restaurant that included basic Mexican food staples of rice, beans, corn tortillas, meats, salsas, and important fresh toppings. As a Mexico travel and cuisine afficionado, I judge an American Mexican-style restaurant by the quality, consistency and flavor of the menu basics like rice, beans, tortillas, fresh salsas, fresh toppings, soups, and meat preparation methods. Along with everyone else in our party of 6, I was served watery, runny, refried beans, mushy rice, pasty taco meat, and basic salsas made from canned ingredients and/or actually canned salsas; the cheeses were poor quality and tasted heavily processed, while the tortillas were reheated American grocery store type. The meats tasted and appeared deep-fried. This restaurant serves a poor representation and preparation of authentic Mexican cuisine. The service staff was very amenable, welcoming, and attentive to the large crowd of locals. This is not a restaurant of personal choice or preference to dine due to the food quality and its lackadaisical preparation. I would not recommend it to friends or family as authentic Mexican or quality...
Read moreThis used to be one of my favorite places to eat. I recently moved back to the area after being away for 5 years and was very disappointed with how much this restaurant has gone downhill. Most of the time, our chips have been burnt which kind of ruins one of the best aspects of eating at a Mexican restaurant. The food doesn't taste as good, but the worst thing now is the service. The wait staff seems more interested in sitting around and socializing than doing their job. I have not been in when it's been crowded yet it still takes a long time to be seated, to get chips and salsa, to get drinks, and to place an order. One particular time this happened to us, we complained to the owner and our waitress acted like a pouty teenager and didn't speak to us when she brought out our food, more drink, ticket, etc. I sincerely hope that some improvements can be made to salvage this...
