El Tejano (Helena) — Restaurant in Helena

My friend and I arrived an hour before closing and were seated immediately. As soon as we took our seats, our server arrived with chips and salsa; shortly after she brought out cheese dip and our drinks. The chips and salsa were good and spicy, but I didn't really care for their cheese dip (it wasn't hot enough, causing the consistency of it to thicken and become lumpy.) I had the drink special recommended by our server, the House Margarita, which was extra strong, courtesy of my new best friend, the server.🤣 I had chicken chimichangas, rice and beans, and my friend had a house salad, which is a garden salad with guacamole and Pico de Gallo added, along with fish and scallops, rice and beans. My food was good, although I don't particularly like English peas and carrots in my rice (unless I'm adding Soy sauce😉).. My friend said his salad was "okay" and he really liked the fish, rice and beans, but did not care for the scallops because they were rubbery. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are huge (I had the remainder of my plate boxed up to take home; I'll get another full meal out of this one plate). Overall, my margarita was excellent (strong strong strong), the service was great, the food was good but could have been better and if we're ever hungry while out and about at this time of night in Helena, we'll...

Beware, they're going to try to rip you off, at least the guys operating their food truck. We placed our order, they tell us it's $31, I hand them a credit card and they tell me there's a 4% service charge for credit cards, no problem. Several minutes later, he hands me the machine to add the tip, the charge is $45. I didn't approve the charge, they approved it themselves before even handing it to me, the $1.24 cc service charge "magically" changed to $14.

I call them out, they fumbled around for several more minutes while a long line forms behind us. The guy comes back and hands me $5 saying they can't cancel the charge. I tell him that's not enough and someone else shows up and rudely tells me "That's how much we owe you". I tell him the math doesn't add up and he tells me "that's how much after tax and the cc fee, next order please".

Tax was already included and even if it wasn't, it still didn't add up. $31 + 14% fee = $35.34, NOT the $40 they charged me. I have a feeling they're running this scam on a lot of people, avoid them like the plague. Their food is way over salted anyway and overpriced, even before the fake extra...

I seriously don't know how this place has such great reviews. We've been twice. The first time, the food was gross, bland and nothing special. The prices are more expensive than other mexican restaurants. Today, I ordered the chicken breast, beans and rice (lunch special #16). The chicken was hard and chewy. I told the waiter it tasted like it was over cooked in a microwave. He said he'd throw it back on the grill. I told him that that wouldn't solve the problem. There was no fixing that chicken! He asked me what I wanted to do with it. Seriously? I told him that I either needed a new one or something different. He brought me out a new one and it was just as gross! I didn't eat it. He asked me how it was and I told him that it wasn't good. Not once did he ever offer to take it off the bill. I ended up paying for a meal that I couldn't eat. Awful food and awful customer service.
