We have given the Hellertown Bakery three tries and unfortunately all of the items we purchased were no better than grocery store quality. Our first purchase was a loaf of rye bread "fresh out of the oven," they said. It tasted and had the texture of bread that was two weeks old--stale, dry, crumbly, and totally inedible--so we threw it away. Next we tried three different flavors of turnover (blueberry, raspberry, and a third I can't recall) and all were bland. Either they use margarine or cheap flavorless butter because the pastry has absolutely no flavor. They are clearly baked for too long, as they were very dry with no remaining moisture on the inside. The fillings are scant and not made with fresh fruit--more likely a cheap store-bought jam, which tastes of overly sweetened 'fruit flavor," and is too dry from the over-baking. Next we tried two cupcakes (Andes mint and chocolate) and both were awful. The cake tastes and has the crumb of a box mix and, again, was very dry. The buttercream frosting is greasy (margarine, cheap butter, or perhaps even shortening), too sweet, and the mint flavor in the Andes cupcake tastes so fake I could barely eat it - so much peppermint extract that it makes your tongue tingle. Perhaps they should try a peppermint emulsion if they want a strong mint flavor. Both cupcakes were filled with (what the little poorly written, saggy label called) "ganache," but this was not a well-exicuted ganache. When I tried to cut the cupcakes in half the ganache squished the bottom of the dry cake, and when I tried to separate the halves it ripped away from the cake and stuck to the knife, leaving me with a pile of dry cake crumbs and a ganache-covered knife - the chocolate:cream ratio was way off or maybe the cream was too hot. The chocolate itself was not high quality either, perhaps Nestle chocolate chips? Lastly, we tried a chocolate chip cookie, which was by far the most edible of all, but was still too dry--although I'll admit that this could be more personal preference as I much prefer a chocolate chip cookie that is thick and soft in the middle.
In sum: at best the items were of average grocery store quality and at worst they were...
Read moreI recently went to Hellertown Bakery to get a cake for my grandmothers birthday. I was told that this bakery had really good cakes, and pastries, but I'll never know. When I went in there was no one at the front, and I heard a woman in the back say "I'll be right there". Meanwhile I decided to check out the case which had the baked goods, but there was barely anything in there. That's beside the point though. After looking at the case for a few seconds I saw what looked like a mouse running from behind the case towards the counter. I jumped back and looked to my right only to positively see a mouse chewing on something and then run to the back where the ovens and raw foods are. I don't know if this is normal for them or just a fluke, but if there is a nest of mice in that bakery a health inspector should go there and check it out immediately. After I saw it run to the back I left the bakery in a hurry, and ran down the street to my car. After that I just went to Giant down the street to get my cake.
Nothing like a mouse running around a business that sells food to turn you off to them for good. Will not ever go back...
Read moreSmall, not much for visual atmosphere. BUT, what you get when you open the door and step inside is absolutely heavenly. That smell of fresh, delicious, mouthwatering pastries and breads. You can't buy that kind of pleasure, its free for the taking. Now, if you decide to check this place out, do not be surprised nor offended by the price of the goods. After all, it's NOT our familiar Giant "bakery". Where they have the same six flavors of muffins which have been oven baked from batter that comes premixed and shipped via the Giant semi-truck. This place is THE REAL DEAL. They start measuring and mixing individual ingredients, before the sun comes up. Just to produce and provide us fresh from the oven, quality bakery delights. So, for truely genuine, made from scratch bakery goods, the price is right and worth every penny. The only negative side is the fact that when I've gone in, most of the supply has been sold off. I guess the word is getting out about the...
