I was really excited to try this restaurant and love Thai. While my food was overall good. Here are some of my concerns. It felt like opening week at a new restaurant that is still working out flaws. The sever who greeted our table was 16-ish young, and uninvested. Maybe the owners daughter? I was there with my husband and daughter. They ordered the BA MI Pu, and I ordered the Short Ribs Khao Soi. While my dish was actually incredibly delicious. It ended up getting cold. When another server who was helping the table brought out the Ba mi Pu dishes he sat them down telling us there was zero broth for them, and they were just plain unflavored noodles. He stated- “sorry, the chef is out”. We asked for a substitute and this server came back stating it would be 15 minutes. Then another server came over seeing we weren’t eating. She went back to the chef to check in. At this point you could clearly observe that the chef was agitated. She came back to us stating it will be longer than 15 minutes because now the chef is making another tables meal ahead of your broth. All three of our meals sat on our table waiting for this broth. Someone stopped in and tried to explain that there was a communication error between the server and the chef, and asked if I wanted my food heated when theirs came back out. Finally our food came out at about 8:30pm (reservation Bering at 7:30pm) We ended up waiting on two small 6 oz servings of warm broth. At this point we just ate the food as is and nobody came back to check if it was okay anyway or if I had wanted mine heated. Nobody really said anything more for that matter. My husband expressed that if he had knew they were out of the broth and had no intention of making more until we asked, he would have ordered something else. The atmosphere was nice, and my dish was room temperature but good. Wasn’t impressed with the other dish or the poor communication and attitude of the chef. They did give us a 10 % discount but did not mention it or anything else. It’s unfortunate. Especially after reading other reviews from last year, I’m wondering if there is new ownership? We still left over 20% tip for the sever, despite the issues with dinner. Overall first impression does make me...
Read moreThe prices are a good deal higher than Thai restaurants in the area, but La Kang feels better value because the food is that much tastier. The kitchen team must have very refined palates because everything I’ve tried have been exceptionally strong yet balanced. It’s very easy to make the food too sour or too sweet, yet they always toe the line with finesse. The fried chicken, khao soi, and garlic shrimp with butter fried rice are strong recommends; and lately I’ve been obsessed with the scallop num pla.
The fried chicken was fried without any breading or batter, yet the skin became crackly crisp while the meat didn’t get stringy one bit. The sauce that came with it had a nice funk.
The khao soi was extremely rich and bursting with flavor. Don’t feel pressured to finish the soup, as it felt like a whole can of coconut cream. The short rib was tender and gelatinous, not dry in the slightest. The noodles had a comforting texture, soft and silky smooth with just a little bite.
The garlic shrimp with butter fried rice took me back to seafood “restaurants” that only existed under makeshift tents at the side of the street, which are scattered throughout Southeast Asia. It has that je ne sais quoi while elevating it.
The scallop num pla was intensely sour and fiery with lots of nuance and texture from the mango, onions, and toasted rice. Be careful about ordering it spicy. I have a high spice tolerance yet I was in pain. Medium is...
Read moreThis is a New York City level restaurant hidden in Hellertown. It’s a true gem. The care and attention to detail in each dish is exquisite, from flavors to presentation in these perfectly made dishes. And it was so reasonably priced for the high quality of food you receive. Thank you so much for this delicious meal!! We will definitely be back.
Update: I still think this place makes high quality food. But I’ve been disappointed the last few times as someone with a fish/seafood allergy they don’t seem to be willing to modify anything and the list of “safe foods” on their menu is different based on who I ask/who is there. I understand they can’t change certain dishes but it’s really disappointing when they tell you one time they can accommodate for certain dishes and you come back and they basically say you can pick between one rice dish or one noodle dish :-( there are very few restaurants of this quality around so I am extra bummed and frustrated by the list of what I am able to safely eat changing every time I try to eat here. It makes me wonder if they just don’t want to adjust or if one time it was actually something unsafe vs safe? I would eat here weekly if I could actually eat it. They have lost what would have been a regular customer from me. Which is sad. You should still eat there because the food quality is great but felt I should share my...
