I typically do not write reviews but this experience was worth noting and sharing with the public. Went to New York Chinese restaurant and here was my experience.
Upon walking in the restaurant , itis small with maybe 6 tables inside. It was busy with folks waiting for food to go and a few dining in which got me excited. Walked up to the register and told the young man we wanted to dine in. He said sit wherever you like. We sat down and waited maybe 15 minutes for someone to approach our table which was not a great start. Had to go back up to the front and ask for service.
A young lady came and took our order. She brought out our drinks right away, no apology for the wait or pleasentry exchanged . She was not mean just indifferent and not welcoming.
We ordered individual dinner plates that came with soup, a piece of crab rangoon, an eggroll, entree, and fried rice for about $15 which i thought was a good price.
Our server brought out the hot and sour soup. It was awful. The flavors were strange. They gave us a big 16 ounce cup. What a waste.
Next came the crab rangoon and eggroll. Another disaster. Crab rangoon filling was liquidy and sweet. Not my jam. I love eggrolls and had really high hopes based on other reviews, but unfortunately was another fail. Tons of cabbage inside and another awkward sour flavor to boot.
So next it was entree time. My dining companion had the chicken curry. He said it was decent. They brought his food out and it took another 5 minutes before they brought out my egg foo young. That's definitely a no no in my book. Improper serving etiquette that makes the table feel weird with food in front of some and not all for that long. I know this isn't fine dining but come on guys!
Finally my egg foo young was brought to the table. The egg foo young was the ONLY thing that I ate at New York Chinese that I liked. The fried rice was overcooked and bland.
Usually Google reviews don't steer me wrong but definitely missed the mark on this one. I cannot understand why the high ratings. Maybe to those that haven't had great Chinese food this is good however I'm accustomed to the Chinese food from chinatown in Chicago. There is way better than this place in Henderson...
Read moreIt was busy, food orders moving out the door, grill hot and smokin, phone ringing off the hook, customers bustin in the doorway to pick up their usuals. So far all good signs this place is a good decision.
Moo Goo Gai Pan, Egg Foo Young, duck sauce AND hot mustard?? Oh yes that made me go for this restaurant. As someone originally from the east coast who grew up on Chinese-American food, this is a close 2nd to 1.portion , 2. flavour , 3. options and 4. price.
While all of that is important, our biggest mistake coming here....-
not knowing how big the portions were in order to order better!
(TLDR)- As I grabbed our bag of food, I deeply underestimated what we were in for. It was litterally hot & heavy; easily weighed a good 10+ lbs and i buckled under its unexpected weight. I was pleasantly surprised. Yes there are containers to represent portion sizes on the wall, but the amount of food they packed in and taped them closed! The combination plate was wrapped in a bag bc it was filled to the brim and sauce leaking out! Ayyyeee!
On our next trip we will do 1 (one) noodle instead of 2 orders of pork fried rice. We had enough between a combination plate and a family meal to feed 4-5 people instead of our 3. Left-overs is an understatement. There was no need for extra egg rolls unless you have a picky eater or a lover of them. Egg rolls are large, crispy/flakey and thick! The shrimp and crab rangoon are big enough to fill you up. We grabbed wonton soup - THICK & HEARTY!! Ordering that as a side is totally worth it.
We came on a Saturday around dinner time, if lunch specials are the same portions, it's an absolute amazing price. Consider ordering to-go.
Thank you for being close to our house. Not being near Chinatown or KTown is tough when we have a craving but most spots are not...
Read moreDon't be in a hurry. A little slow on production, but are you wanting good food or just fast food? I ordered their General Tso chicken and was told it "is a little bit spicy." I quickly requested it to be EXTRA spicy. Unfortunately, the word extra must mean something different here, cause it has no pepper or spice to it all. It wasn't bad, don't get me wrong, just not spicy. The soup and the Tso had a funny seafood smell to it. Not sure if it was the plate itself, or maybe being in a close proximity when cooking it, but it definitely had a fish or crab smell to it. Didn't taste fishy, but the smell was obvious. Overall, wasn't bad. I'd. order from here again.
Update Oct. 2016: Tried it again. This time I ordered at the counter, and the manager (the only one not in a matching tshirt) took my order. I explicitly ask for chicken Lo Mein without ANY vegetables (which is basically just noodles with the soy sauce.) I also order the General and ask for EXTRA spicy. Repeated my 2 requests and he even repeated it back to me. Went across the street to the store, picked up a few things, came back and waited an additional 12 minutes (overall about 23 minutes in total). Open it up and my Lo Mein has white onions, carrots, some alfalfa green stuff, and green onions all up in there. Kids will have a fun time picking this out for the next half hour. And my General had one solo red pepper on it and once again wasn't even the least bit spicy. Gave it two tries and both times was disappointed. Not needing a 3rd time to confirm that this place is below average. (And there are a lot of average Chinese spots...
