Donut Life — Restaurant in Hickory

Donuts were great!!! BUT when I got there midday they were completely out. I was first in line and they said it would be 20-25 minutes so my kids and I went to sit down. Within five minutes the line was out the door. Thinking they would honor my place in line I was sitting trying to calm my screaming toddler. Once the donuts came out everyone jumped up and got in line. I understood that I couldn’t just pass everyone but the woman up front was the one to tell me I could go sit and she would let us know when they were ready. Of course everyone in front of me got like two sides each so by the time it was my turn they were out once again. Had to wait another 20 mins with two screaming kids. Finally the owner came out the back and personally asked me what I wanted and I just got half a dozen glazed because if I wanted anything else I would have to wait even longer. They boxed my donuts and didn’t tell me they were ready until they had been sitting on the counter for at least five minutes. They were good but not 40+ minutes of waiting good. The doughnuts here are phenomenal! Light, yeast, not overly sweet, with wonderful flavor. The little folks, and I, in my life love going here--it is always a special treat. The staff are great. They are always polite, patient, and kind to the customers; especially small ones.

I noticed a couple other reviews commenting they wished there were more choices later in the day--after 1pm etc. So just a quick heads up, this is a small local business. They open early, they make small batches of their doughnuts, and the doughnut are POPULAR. The favorite varieties sell out fast. If you want a specific type, the best thing you can do is get there early. Personally, I think any of their flavors are worth a try, but if you have a favorite the best way to get it is to get to the store earlier in the day. In my experience, they don't typically start running out of flavors until 10ish, but it can be earlier on...

July 2023.... Updated Review: i had given this place a 3 out of 5 starts (read below).... they have moved the lady I had an issue with to the kitchen instead of the counter where she was tending for customers. Thats a better place for her. Donuts are a little pricey but delicious. Good for special treats!

Old review from 2020... First please make sure you are being charged the right amount. The Asian lady keeps charging all donuts at 1.69 instead of 1.09 if you buy a lot of them it will add up. Always had a great experince but lately not so much. New lady helping in the counter lacks customer service skills. Then, I often find that by the time you make it there even if its before lunch they run out of most varieties of donuts. They tell you next time you can call in and place and order but when you do they tell you the owner dont want to make them. Very confusing. Wish they would go back to having great...
