El Sarape Mexican Restaurant — Restaurant in Hickory

I miss texmex from my home state (TX), these guys are the closest besides El Paso by biglots, that being said, I'm tremendously disappointed with todays service. I called in ToGo and the lady didn't seem to know what was on the menu because i tried to order some enchiladas ive had from there before and she said they didnt make it... Whatever, no big deal, I order a beef chimi dinner plate sor my husband with NO CHEESE, because he's LACTOSE INTOLERANT, a soft beef taco, a beef borrito, and a chicken quesadilla. I go get the food and the lady practically tosses my order to me through the window, abruptly turns around and takes off, nothing said, I called and asked that she be reminded that being busy isn't a reason to treat a paying customer unprofessionally, the guy on the phone was great, he asked me if there was any way he could make up for it but I assured him it would be fine I just wished to convey my feelings. I get home and I have a mystery enchilada plate, ice cream, and a mystery dinner plate that we thought was the chimi (turns out its not) COVERED in cheese sauce, the only thing they got right was my sons quesadilla. Now, come on guys, I spent nearly $40 on food nobody ate! I understand they were over their heads slam packed, but to get it that wrong???? Great service and food, if we aren't busy, is that the slogan? Update: the ice cream was delicious.

Me and my husband used to come here all the time but the past two times we have gotten food from them we have found items in our food that should have not even been able to make it into our food. The first time this happened my husband ordered an ACP and when they brought us our food he noticed a hair no big deal it happens, he let our waiter know and he was more than happy to get his food remade. The second plate came out and looked good so my husband began to eat as anyone would and he gives me a weird look and goes to pull something out of his mouth and when I tell you I was shocked I was shocked when he pulled out a rolled up piece of METAL I repeat METAL. We told our waiter and he did not say a word takes his plate and brings us our check. We decided that night we weren’t sure if we wanted to go back. Well it had been a couple of months and last night my husband wanted to give them another chance bad mistake on our part. I just went to reheat my leftovers from last night and I found a piece of hard plastic that I almost broke my tooth on when I bit down into my burrito. Edited 8/14/25: left my previous review to show contrast. This place has fell off. Let's count the ways: Ordered street tacos (which should have onion and cilantro) and yet I received them with nothing on them. Why? They where dry and plain. Yuck. Ordered a kids ACP with steak instead of chicken and they have severely reduced the portion size on that. 3 ordered two orders of Elites (street corn) somehow that reduced in size as well and was gross. Covered in what tasted like cheap mayo and cheese dust. Again...yuck. Ordered 70.00 worth of unimpressive food and they give me one little half cup of salsa. Idk what's happened to this place but that was the worst Mexican food I've ever had. I no longer recommend this place. Especially after having some of the other local places. It's a shame too because this place used to be great. See my previous review below from about a year ago.

Old and no longer true review: I absolutely love this restaurant but my only complaint is sometimes they don't answer the phone. I guess that's a complication with being so good. So don't misunderstand my frustration, it is wonderful but dang answer the phone! I want some of that...
