We went today for our New Years Day meal... The place was slammed. The empty tables had not been bused. Only a 8 top table open so the two of us sat down. There were only two waitresses and one of them had to work the register. They apologized for the wait. Another couple arrived, we directed them to share our table. More people arrived for tables and take-outs. Finally two people came from Standard Oyster Bar, the next door business, they helped take orders and to bus tables. Other customers came in and were seated. The waitress started to take the orders of a group that came after us. I politely told the waitress that another lady before us and a couple after us was next before that group. I told the waitress, that I was not being rude but to only be fair. I know she didn't realize who was next, but that group certainly did. They were finally able to take our order when things settled down. Once our order was taken, our food was delivered hot, very generous portions, and good. The special was 2 pork chops or ham, collard greens, peas, cooked garbage, corn bread or biscuits, and tea or coffee. We even got side meat with our order! All was 9.99! We understand that only two waitresses were scheduled (bad call) but, fortunately the Standard Oyster Co. has a relationship with Granny's and the two employees who came to the rescue were a lifesaver. We will return to Granny's but hope that enough employees are scheduled for the sake of customers and the overworked staff. Despite being understaffed, the wait staff were...
Read moreOn vacation from MD to NC with my family. This was the ONLY establishment in Hickory, or the entire state of NC where I was treated like "less than family". My wife had ordered breakfast for the family online and I went down the road to pick it up. The lady who brought out my food asked me to sign the receipt, which I did. Before she gave me our food she demanded to see the online order. I apologized for not having the order on my phone, but I could call my wife and have her text me the screenshot. She wasn't having any of that and said I wasn't getting the food until I satisfied her demands. I called my wife, but got no answer. By that point I was perturbed but still polite, and suggested she refund my money and keep the food. She immediately huffs off and goes to get the manager. The manager comes out, bless her heart, and tries her best to smooth things over and assure me the employee was simply confused. She gave me the food. I appreciated the effort but the damage was already done. The dining room was full of customers looking at me as if I was running a scam for free food. When I visit my hometown I always feel overwhelming courtesy. Customer service is of a different standard in NC, and I was appalled and genuinely hurt to be treated in such a manner when I made every effort to comply. ...
