Nara Japanese Restaurant — Restaurant in Hickory

I was incredibly disappointed by my visit to Nara, they do not have the traditional Japanese dishes I desired. This restaurant serves very Americanized Japanese fare such as Teriyaki chicken and various Hibachi dishes. You will not find Tonkatsu, Omurice, or even miso soup.

Nara offers sushi but the rolls were very modified versions of the typical Japanese offerings; I opted to avoid the sushi given the descriptions and uncertain fish quality.

I ordered the Teriyaki chicken with carrots and fried rice. My food was delivered extremely quickly; however, the dish was mediocre. The chicken was lackluster and the carrots tasted like they were from a box. The fried rice was a complete disappointment, it was essentially rice with some carrots and corn.

The restaurant seemed incredibly dirty; the ceiling, carpet, and walls all need serious attention. The kitchen looked clean from a distance and the restaurant managed to get a 94 on their health rating.

The only good thing I can say about Nara is that the staff is friendly and the food is cheap...

I tried the drive thru at Nara Japanese Restaurant earlier today and had a wonderful experience. This was my third visit in recent weeks and they did not disappoint! I love the fact that you can drive up to the window and place your order. A smiling and friendly young lady took my order for a teriyaki chicken dinner and I paid just under 10 bucks, very reasonable indeed. The box of food comes out in about 3 or 4 minutes and I'm on my way. The staff there is awesome, as is the food! I pulled over to a nearby parking lot, ready to eat the hot meal. Every part of my meal was amazing and I enjoyed each and every bite! There were outstanding cuts of teriyaki chicken and the rice, brocolli, and sweet carrots were delicious as well! I’m writing this review while sitting in the restaurant. I’ve been coming here for years and have always had great service. That was until tonight. The waiting staff is cussing and being loud and rude. They are also throwing food at each other in the kitchen. All while the manager is sitting at a both watching tv. Ever since they opened up Tokyo in granite falls(which is absolutely fantastic) the staff here has started to not care. Please get your staff under control. This will be my last time eating at Naras until changes are made.
