Spent part of the day in Hillsborough for a special event. Had lunch here. Excellent choice. It is noisy, but it is from everyone having an enjoyable time. We actually were able to catch a seat at Kim's bakery (a must try for baked goods) after their hours. Follow on Facebook for daily specials. There were three of us. They provide water in cute decanters emblazoned with their logo. Two of us don't imbibe, the other person rarely does. Although, we did not get any alcohol, they have a great selection that would complement any menu item. One ordered the classic burger with fries. Cooked perfectly and juicy. He stated that was the tastiest, freshest burger he has ever eaten and his fries were hot and fresh too. My other friend ordered off the special. She got the Ribeye cheese steak like it comes minus the A1. She also got fries. She stated the steak was cooked to perfection and loved her fries. I got the truffle burger. The burger was cooked just like the other one perfect, fresh, and juicy. The arugula was peppery, the onions caramelized, and the truffle aioli tasty. The guyere was ooey gooey goodness. One of the top burgers I have ever eaten. I got the cucumber salad. The best seasoned cukes I have ever put in my mouth. The Mexican coke was the...

The food is good and it’s a nice place with a good beer list. They always have great specials every week. And I really want to give it five stars but until they fix their service issues they’re going to stay at three stars for me. I’ve noticed they’re excellent with their regulars they know them by name and their orders which is fantastic. But for people who go somewhat regularly or on a whim, service can be fair or good but normally not great. They don’t have particular tables so it is seat yourself and whoever gets to you first takes your order . There are times I’ve gone I’ve had one server and there are times I go I’ve had five servers. There is no real system to serving your tables it’s whoever has a open minute delivers and will take your order. Because of this it does lead to missed drinks, food, and sometimes a long wait times. I’ve even seen them not wait on tables because they didn’t notice. Normally the staffs reply is “oh I thought someone else got to you.” Even takeout is sometimes an issue when they’re really busy because you have to flag someone down in order to get your food even if it’s paid for and everything. That being said the servers are very nice and always accommodating but really it’s the system that...

Arguably the best food in town, but you have to know what you're getting yourself into. The Wooden Nickel is a town staple and people absolutely love it. So you're rarely going to find a night where it isn't packed to the brim, standing room only. You need to find your own seat, which sometimes come down to asking a group if they're leaving. There's no shame in this, as everyone recognizes that the Nickel doesn't have enough seating for their popularity. And you might have to flag down your server to grab another drink.

The food, drinks, and atmosphere are worth it. Their farm to table burgers are legendary. The rotating menu of local food has something for everyone. And their tap takeovers are the best. If you go here often, you get to know the staff and they're all great. People might be put off at first because it's hectic here, but I can assure you the Nickel staff do great things for their customers and the community. Not every establishment gives their staff a paid week of vacation for Covid, or delivers lunch to first line workers for free. Get to know this local treasure and you won't be...

Horrible unwelcoming seats outside, cement mini table & bench that doesn’t reach the ground. No seating was open inside. Place is tiny. Really uncomfortable dangling there. After 45 mins sitting in the cold, with no food, We couldn’t find our server to cancel the order. Most everywhere else was closed at 5 pm on Sunday, so it was this or nothing. She asked if we wanted the check & we told her we hadn’t had our food yet. She looked horrified & did her best to make amends. When the food eventually came it was very disappointing. I had a shrimp salad wrap, it was pure vinegar. The fries were old & tired. My partner had a burger said it wasn’t bad, fries were awful. She discounted the check when she saw we had barely touched the meal. The wooden nickel treated customers like a inconvenience. I wish we just got up and left when the food didn’t come. 90 minutes later, We left hungry, $30 light & late for our long drive home. First trip to Hillsborough, not going to rush back.

The Wooden Nickel in Hillsborough has a huge following. For good reason. The food is well prepared. The service is attentive. (You're not really assigned one wait staff. You get the feeling that all of the wait staff are assigned to your table. They all know what's going on and can get anything you need.) My only caution about this place is this: Read the menu carefully. If it says something is very hot (nickel hot) than it is. I mean it. I love their boneless wings and I ordered them hot. The next level up is "nickel hot" and man it's painful. I'm also a big fan of the onion rings. Perhaps the best I've ever had. The burgers are good. There's always a good selection of beer and other beverages. I really don't have anything bad to say about this place. Highly recommend. There's indoor seating as well as outdoor seating near the sidewalk. In fact, they also have seating in Kim's bake shop next door.
