This is one of the better urban greenways I've been on (though not long) that also connects to Occoneechee Speedway Trail. It is a section of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail too.
While the trail can be accessed throughout, I park at Gold Park and begin near Eno Mountain Road. This is the westernmost end of it. I then walk the 1.5 miles (one way) to the easternmost end at CAHPT Historic Site. I then do the return 1.5 miles. I will add that signs on the Riverwalk have the trail ending at CAHPT but Google Maps has the trail continuing to Occoneechee Speedway Trail. It's about a half mile more if you do that. So do the math. But it is the same trail.
The trail is flat and probably 90% paved with some parts east of River Park sand. It is easily walked and great for families. See strollers, hikers, bikers, kids and the elderly, the whole shebang of folks. Boardwalks and bridges throughout and one section near Gold Park has its own cover/roof type thing. There are numerical safety markers periodically with excellent cell service throughout.
Highlights along the trail (from west to east) are Pollinator Garden and Bee Hotel (Gold Park), Riverwalk picnic area, Riverwalk Bridge, River Park, Occaneechi Indian Village, Hillsborough Urban Gardens, and CAHPT Historic Site. Great features for variety and things to look at.
Nice addition to Hillsborough and one of my favorite paved (mostly) urban greenway type trails. It's also the best maintained I have been on that I...
Read moreOn Sat. We took some relatives from out of state for a walk and were disappointed. We parked at the city garage near Weaver Street Mkt. . About 100 yards away from the garage mud from the Eno had covered the boardwalk . Recent rains had caused the flooding. I and my wife don't mind mud but the relatives refused to continue. Aside from the mud it was possible for a slip and fall to happen. Trying to go to either side would not have helped. I understand the Eno floods but I do not understand why the engineers and planners failed to elevate the walkway in known flood prone sections. Engineers use sophisticated tools to design roads and walkways so the money and effort that goes into a project like this is not wasted. Why did the city not clear the mud? Why not close the walkway temporarily? The beautiful art work (structure made of saplings) had also been removed. For such a beautiful walk in the past the city might think about stepping up and resolve the issues so the park can be enjoyed year round. We did drive to the Occoneechee race track park and walked around. It is very nice. Glad it could be saved and is...
Read moreWe parked at Gold Park and walked the Riverwalk trail. Anyone with a stroller/young child, the grounds are extremely child and pet friendly. We drove 50 minutes to check this out as reading other great reviews. We saw a buck just off the path, wasn't even phased by us,.tons of cardinals, butterflies, frogs and fish so the kids were pleased. In the nature of COVID,. people wore masks if you came across others or everyone stepped to their side just off the path to keep distance. We found several spots that took us down to the ENO to do a quick hop in and splash and back out to explore. We've never been to this area but will definitely be back as we found some other interesting places as...
