Awful.
First Clue...We were not greeted when we arrived. So, I approached the bar and asked a server to be seated. She rudely said to sit "wherever". I asked if it was too buggy to sit outside with the ceiling fans on, and I was answered with a look like I was stupid.
Second Clue...After choosing a table, we waited for over 10 minutes before anyone spoke to us. They had 3 servers plus a bartender for 4 parties and us. They weren't very busy. A different server finally asked to take our order. We had yet to see a menu or order drinks.
Third Clue...We came to Big Jim's due to their ad in an island restaurant magazine (AmericasCuisine Hilton Head), which boldly advertised "gluten free options". Ha! I asked our server about a gluten free menu, or gluten free bun for a burger and she didn't know what i was talking about. After I repeated the request, she disappeared and came back saying, "no gluten free buns, no gluten free" looking like a deer in the headlights. This put me in a bind. A clueless server and kitchen is a danger to my health. A hungry husband and two teenage kids is a danger to my sanity! So, my family ordered and I passed.
Fourth Clue...30 minutes passed and our server didn't bother to check on us even once!
Fifth Clue...We were ready to leave hungry when the food finally arrived. My kids' food wasn't as ordered, both burgers were missing bacon. But, they were really hungry and we were afraid it would be another half hour if we sent the burgers back. The food quality was mixed, but mediocre at best. The french fries were good. The burgers were pre-formed processed looking patties that the kids rated decent and okay. The brisket was average. The coleslaw was a flavorless bowl of shredded cabbage drenched in cheap mayonnaise. The beans were so bad they were inedible.
The only truly positive thing I can say is that it was a nice, convenient walk from the Marriott at Palmetto Dunes. And, it passes the Market, a small convenience store. On the walk back to the hotel, we stopped and let the kids grab an ice cream while I picked up a milk, Cheerios' single serve bowl, and a Chobani yogurt. We sat outside at the market to eat and all agreed - I had the best meal of...
Read moreThey now have an excellent gluten-free wrap used with any type of sandwich. Outstanding. Playing golf is not required to eat at this great little gem tucked away at the Palmetto Dunes Robert Trent Jones Ocean Course. I have only eaten a few items so far and will take some time to complete all of the foods listed on the menu that I am able to eat due to celiac. The staff is well versed in the gluten-free selections and is double-checked by Chef Patrick and his staff. The few items I have ordered, the pulled pork is nice and tender with just the right amount of spices without becoming overbearing and still taste the pork flavor. The smoked chicken is excellent. As much as I enjoy pulled pork, I believe the smoked chicken edges out the pork. They also have gluten-free buns, which increases the available options for dining. All barbeque items are excellent and nothing similar to what you may find in Long Island, NY, the birthplace of Chef Patrick, and that is a great thing. Similar to a restaurant located north of Atlanta with an OUT OF BUSINESS sign on the door. The name, New York City Style Ribs. I have never heard of these famous ribs and when I have an opportunity, I think I shall pass. They serve one of the top two, in my opinion, gluten-free pizza crusts, recipe created by Chef Patrick in the country. Select the toppings, kick back with a cocktail, the pizza will arrive within 10 minites, and it is excellent. Tip; always order gluten-free pizza well done. I am happy to conduct a taste test to determine the best gluten-free pizza, but the other two vying for the number 1 position are located in Palm Springs, CA and Morris Plains, NJ. Will require a travel budget in order to complete the tasting. There are several beers on tap, more in cans or bottles along with the flavored vodka drinks. With the extensive menu there is no doubt that you will find something to enjoy. Eat good food, drink a few beers while overlooking a portion of the golf course. Outdoor seating is available as well. You will enjoy and if you are unable to decide on what to order, the Staff members are extremely knowledgeable and friendly and will assist. The entrance to the restaurant is the same as...
Read moreI have been to Big Jims many times for a variety of reasons. This visit was with out of town family. After playing 18 holes on the RTJ course, our foursome came up to Big Jims for a late post round lunch. I did not want to pack in a ton of food since we had dinner plans, so just ordered an App - the Sweet Chili Crispy Shrimp. The others in my foursome ordered Chicken Tenders w Fries, Shrimp Po Boy w Fries, and the Smoked Chicken Sandwich with Potato Salad. I did not take photos of the food this time, but each plate came out nicely presented and the food all looked great. The Shrimp did not disappoint. There were 8 butterflied shrimp that come out very nicely fried and not pre-tossed in the creamy sweet chili sauce which allows the shrimp to stay crispy, the sauce comes on the side for dipping. The shrimp tasted fresh, not sure if they are from frozen or fresh, and not sure if they were local or not, but they were better than I was expecting. I would definitely get that again. The Fries are also very good there. They are McDonalds cut and come out in stainless cups which I always like, nice presentation. I remember the Smoked Chicken was generously piled high on the roll. The atmosphere is great when the weather is nice outside and you can sit on the patio overlooking the practice green...
