Maybe it is just me. My sister from Colorado was visiting and we just had to treat her to some fantastic pizza. I reckon I have visited Dough Boys pizza once a year for at least the last 10 years. My bride and I come down to Hilton Head for our anniversary every September. Dough Boys to me is the standard bearer for delicious pizza in the Carolinas. Until this visit. Let’s start with the good news: Our server, Kenzie was quick to greet us, very friendly and efficient. Even though Dough Boys does a brisk take-out business, Kenzie arrived at out table within a minute of us seating ourselves to greet us and take our drink orders. We had just finished a 90 minute dolphin cruise tour to show my sister the sights of the harbor and take in a few dolphin sightings. I was thirsty and ready for a brew. Kenzie informed us no wine or beer was available. Dough Boys was under new ownership and the new liquor license had not come in yet. Maybe it was my imagination, but I took this information with a little bit of concern. Even though I had come to trust Dough Boys over the years, I always read recent reviews of a restaurant I am visiting, and I had read a couple of reviews that expressed some unhappiness with their recent experiences. We ordered a half Boardwalk and a Spring Break Jake (I’m very familiar with this combo), a Coco’s Hawaiian, and a Calzone, The Bomb. The caution flag definitely came out when after ordering, Kenzie appeared to say one ingredient, the shaved ribeye of The Bomb, the Calzone, my spouse ordered, was not available. She instead ordered the Meatball calzone. I wrote that this place does a lot of takeout so I was prepared for a bit of a wait, but surprisingly, the two pizzas came out pretty fast. The Calzone appeared about 4-5 minutes later. The cheese side of the pizza looked just perfect, but The Boardwalk side seemed off. The Boardwalk is supposed to have two layers of pepperoni. Judging from the photo I posted, it seems like maybe one slice only got the double layer of pep. I eagerly helped myself to a slice of cheese and that’s when the Yellow Caution flag was replaced by the Red flag, essentially stopping, that is, halting, the dining experience for me. I felt like I had just had a heapin’ teaspoon of salt. The slice was so cheesy just like you want in a cheese pizza but, oh my, the salt. One of the reviews I read mentioned how salty the pizza is I forced myself to eat it and and then took a slice of the Hawaiian. This was thin crust and the dough was drooping under the weight of the ingredients. I was cautiously optimistic but guarded as I was wondering if this slice would prove to be very salty too. It almost was, not as much as my cheese slice, mind you, since that has a lot more cheese. The one cheese ingredient these two pizzas have in common is the House Cheese Blend. If you are watching your sodium intake, I urge extreme caution. My spouse told me her calzone was good but couldn’t find any meatballs. She did find shaved meat in her calzone. Ironically, it was the shaved ribeye that was missing in The Bomb calzone. I guess it was hiding in the Meatball calzone. Personally, I’d have rated the food experience just One Star. I seriously question whether I will eat the leftover cheese pizza. To be fair, both my wife, sister and son thought the food was good. Maybe it is just me, after all.

2025 I didn't feel like a pizza or a sub tonight so I asked for the wonderful beef ziti and oh my goodness is it tasty. A four-person meal with a side salad and a bit of garlic bread would be a lovely meal. For me it'll give me three nights dinner. And it is really yummy. The staff at the Hilton Head location is wonderful. I've not had a chance to try Bluffton yet but will someday soon. 🩵🌻🩵 Happy 2024 They are still as yummy as ever. Still the best on Hilton Head. 🌻 excellent service, I really enjoy the food, would recommend it for anybody to go for a pizza, a calzone, or one of their wonderful subs... and more. Happy New Year... Still my fav! 🌻 They are still as good as ever. I like using the toast tab app as it works very well when ordering to pick up. Great staff as always. You have to try the salted caramel cheesecake or the salted caramel white chocolate cookies. And as always my fav sub is the double cheeseburger. All the pizzas are awesome. You cannot go wrong at DoughBoys Hilton Head 🌻🙃🌻 You can't go wrong at DoughBoys!!! UPDATE! I have friends visiting from PA and asked where my favorite pizza place is. Of course I answered Doughboys HHI. I've not yet had the chance to go out to the Bluffton store yet. Not only did we enjoy an amazing chopped salad and a wonderful pizza, we were able to sit and enjoy our conversation for over an hour. We plan to go back again next week before they head North. I cannot speak highly enough of the staff, the owners, and the food at Doughboys Hilton Head. Yep, best pizza on the island and some amazing subs as well. And the chopped salad cannot be beat. 🩵🌻🩵 As always, I enjoy every meal I every have ever eaten or taken home from Doughboys Hilton Head. Cannot be beat. I have not changed my mind at all. If you want a good pizza, a good salad. A good sub. Go see the folks at Doughboys. There's also one in Bluffton now.

After looking at the reviews we decided to have a late night pizza at Dough Boys. Upon entering, it is extremely small but doable. We ordered the Tommy’s Best which includes spinach, ricotta, bacon, garlic and cheese blend. Evidently this is a hand tossed pizza. When it arrived I was a little perplexed that the edge of the pizza crust looked store bought or pre-made. After cooking it didn’t have the nice air pockets in the crust but was flat and the bottom was all one brown sugar color without any variations you would see on a homemade dough crust. The customers next to us also had the hand tossed and their crust was totally different with the air bubbles baked into the outer crust and a true cooked crust with charred parts. Our crust looked like it was made from semolina flour as it had the semolina flour cooked color. I have made enough pizza’s in my life (career firefighter, past pizza maker and true Sicilian) to know the different textures, flours and appearance of cooked dough. This just was not anywhere near similar to the people next to us. The toppings, in my opinion, lacked flavor and not much bacon taste. I’m not saying it was a bad pizza, but it did not rate above a 5 for me on a 1-10 scale. But circumstances could be the culprit as any restaurant knows. Our waitress was fabulous and check on us often. It does no one any favors to complain that this wasn’t up to the individual’s standards as each person is different and it is arbitrary. It just wasn’t my expectation.

I reckon I have visited Dough Boys pizza once a year for at least the last 10 years. My bride and I come down to Hilton Head for our anniversary every September. Dough Boys to me is the standard bearer for delicious pizza in the Carolinas.

Until this visit.

Even though Dough Boys does a brisk take-out business, Kenzie arrived at out table within a minute of us seating ourselves to greet us and take our drink orders.

My husband & I vacationed here on HHI for a week & on our last night, a Saturday, we decided to dine somewhere more laid back & casual. Hubby said he was in the mood for pizza so after looking through reviews, we decided to check out Dough Boys. Upon walking in, it doesn’t look that impressive. To me, it looked like your typical pizza joint. It was very small inside with a handful of tables and a bar area with a few barstools. However, it was very clean & the service we received was excellent. We went there right before dinner rush, so initially we were the only customers in the store, however there was a constant stream of delivery orders going out & calls coming in so we could tell it was a hot spot on HHI. Even with the high volume of orders, we received our food quickly. I ordered a slice of cheese pizza & a small chopped salad w/Greek dressing on the side- hubby ordered a medium pepperoni & bacon pizza. I agree with the other reviews about the salad- it was excellent! I loved the way they have the little paper to fill out all toppings you want on your salad & price was a steal at only $6 w/ 4 included toppings. Very fresh & all my toppings were chopped into the perfect bite size pieces. The dressing was delicious- definitely tasted homemade. A small was more then enough for me and could have easily been shared between two people with a slice of pizza. My slice of pizza was a generous size & was delicious! I like my crust thin typically but the slice I had was regular crust & to me was the perfect thickness. It had just the right amount of cheese on it. Hubby’s pizza was also really good & could have easily been shared between two people as well. My husband is picky but he commented on how much flavor his pizza had & how fresh it was. I also overheard the waitress say that all their veggies are delivered weekly by a local farmer and I totally believe it based on the quality of food. All in all, this was a great little pizza joint with great pizza! We will definitely be back next time we visit the island! I wish we had a place like this close to where we live- I’d be here all the time for pizza & salad carry-out! I do want to note- we came in about 4:30pm & left around 5:15ish. By the time we left, tables started filling up so I would recommend getting here before dinner rush since it’s so small. I can definitely see it getting...
