Three years ago, I embarked on a journey to the beautiful island of Hawaii, known for its sun-kissed beaches, turquoise waters, and an array of culinary delights that would forever change my perception of brunch. While exploring the vibrant streets of this tropical paradise, I stumbled upon a hidden gem called Moke's Bread And Breakfast, which left an indelible mark on my culinary journey. It was a brunch experience like no other, set in an enchanting locale amidst the natural beauty of Hawaii.
As I stepped into the restaurant's cozy ambiance, I was greeted by a tantalizing array of dishes that promised to redefine my notion of brunch. The menu was filled with delectable options, from the Lilikoi Pancakes, adorned with the sweet essence of passion fruit, to the hearty Corned Beef Hash; each item beckoned with the promise of culinary bliss. However, the Loco Moké—a massive plate of gastronomic indulgence—truly captured my imagination.
To fully appreciate the enormity of this culinary masterpiece, one must embark on a journey of epic proportions—an ascent to the summit of Diamond Head, where the breathtaking vistas serve as the perfect appetizer for the feast that awaits below. With each step of the hike, anticipation builds, and by the time you reach the summit, your appetite is as voracious as the waves crashing against the shore below.
Upon returning to the restaurant, I found myself face-to-face with the pièce de résistance: the Big Kat—a secret menu item that dared to challenge even the most audacious of brunch enthusiasts. It was a dish that looked like it could feed an army of people. Two eggs over corned beef hash over ribeye steak, nestled atop a bed of fried rice and smothered in rich gravy, with Portuguese sausage on the side—it was a veritable feast for a king.
Undeterred by the task's enormity, I embarked on a culinary adventure unlike any other. With each forkful, I savored the rich interplay of flavors—the savory notes of the ribeye, the hearty texture of the corned beef hash, and the comforting warmth of the gravy enveloping it all in a blanket of indulgence. It was a culinary symphony that transcended mere sustenance, offering a glimpse into the boundless possibilities of gastronomic delight.
As I polished off the last morsel of this monumental brunch, I was overcome with a sense of satisfaction and contentment, which lingered long after the meal had ended. Amidst the breathtaking beauty of Hawaii and the sumptuous offerings of this enchanting locale, I experienced a genuinely life-changing brunch—an epicurean odyssey that would forever hold a special place in my...
Read more2 1/2 stars Again no pics. The person I went with took pictures. There was a wait of over ten minutes all but two of the tables were empty but, needed to be cleaned. I think they were short staffed. We went on a week day morning around 10ish.
There were dirty tables although the people had been gone before we arrived. While we were eating, there was still a table that had not been cleaned until we were almost finished eating. There was only one other table that arrived while we were there. That being said, now days people order delivery and takeaway, so I can see how if they are short staffed the people dining in house have to be patient.
With four different parties dining in the space, It was quite noisy. There was a table of eight, I do not believe any of them had heard of using an “inside” voice. Every once in a while you were able to hear the music playing in the background.
In anticipation of our order being taken I was excited by the lovely big dishes of food coming out of the kitchen. I saw a plate that came out steaming hot. When the food arrived it looked underwhelming and was barely warm. My companions food was cold. The bread was stale and the butter did not melt on the toast. I don’t need my food to come out hot so that doesn’t bother me. I do like my food to at least start out warm because I am a slow eater.
Our table ordered three different items thinking we would try each other’s meals. None of us were happy with our meals and did not feel the need to try each other’s food. I did not need a takeaway container. No matter what I order I never finish it and I bring it home for my husband to finish. Not this time.
There were only four tables occupied including ours and it seemed too much for the servers to handle. Five days a week I don’t have much going on so I’m not in a hurry for anything. Even the two days a week I have things going on, I’m not in a hurry. I love sitting back relaxing and enjoying my time doing whatever I feel like doing. I just wanted to hurry up and leave.
We eat out three to five days a week sometimes three times a day. When I get good service and food I try and let people know. When I get not so good service or food I also try to inform people. That being said everyone’s taste and expectations are...
Read moreThe food is wonderful, homemade and very tasty. The bread is fresh and wonderful. I had the dark rye as my choice for breakfast. It is a delicious bread rarely found in restaurants today. The owner is out in the crowd, talking with people, and in the kitchen helping. Having been in the restaurant business for nearly 15 years, I am impressed with the hands on help and the importance that he places on supporting staff and getting to know his guests. You can tell how it also serves as an example for his staff, genuinely friendly and polite. The prices, especially in our current price increases in most restaurants are surprisingly lower than most any other breakfast/lunch restaurant. The atmosphere is really homey, nicely painted with beautiful photography prints on the wall. We arrived at 1 pm and the wait was less than 10 minutes, a very reasonably short time for a Sunday. The restaurant was very clean, especially considering over 6 hours of heavy weekend guests. I had their special omelet and found it very good, fresh ingredients and rolled over to appear like a burrito. The eggs cooked just right. They had run out of their special hash browns so I opted for garlic rice, nice crispy dark garlic topping the rice. ( By the way, they have more choices on starches and or greens that most restaurants. Even though the atmosphere was overall great, I did give it a 4 rating only because it really was quite noisy inside, and that's to be expected in older buildings that are all concrete and no sound barriers such as false ceilings etc. I, myself, don't mind noise when dining because it really has been a trend for the past 25 years, especially since the open kitchen became a concept. However, it was difficult to carry on a conversation for the first part of our visit. Overall, a fantastic spot and a wonderful owner and his team make the experience and food quality above expectations. If you've never been, I recommend you go. I'll be going back during a weekday to try some of their lunch options also, especially the wonderful enter salads they create. Mahalo to our server and to the owner for a...
