They say you can always tell how good a place is by the line of people waiting to eat. I'll put it this way, the line was almost at the parking lot when we got here.
My wife brought me here for Father's day. It was on my list of BBQ spots to try in Houston but I hadn't yet. They had a Father's day special going on and a snowball truck outside to add to the festivities. They gave all the Dads in line a free beer while waiting to order which was really nice! My wife stood in line while I waited outside with our kids.
This is a typical bbq style restaurant establishment. The kind where you order/pay first and have your food brought to your table. This place has some unique details like the projector wall and a small play area outside for kids.
Now to the consumptions. They have an extensive menu and kid's menu. They did serve me a free beer but unsure of what their alcohol selection was like. We had the Father's Day blowout platter that included ribs, sausage, brisket, burnt ends (ordered these as extra), turkey, corn bread with maple butter, and your choice of 2 sides (we got loaded mashed potatoes and red cabbage slaw) and a piece of banana cream cake. We also ordered my kids chicken nuggets, peanut butter & jelly sandwich and french fries. Here is a brief sub-review of everything we ate.
Ribs were delectable. Juicy with a sauce generally on the sour side. Maybe with a hint of mustard? Tender, flavorful and among some of the best in Houston. Not sure where to rank them just yet. Brisket was done right. Charred, chewy outside with moist meat that was both fatty and lean. Also well done and delicious. Sausage was spicy and tastes homemade. I am not sure exactly which kind we ordered. It was good but probably my least favorite of the meats. It was something left to be desired. Not sure if the sausage was just spicy and didn't have other pronounced flavors or what. Again, still good. The carved turkey was succulent. Super flavorful. I am usually not a fan of carved turkey unless I cook it on Thanksgiving but this was tasty. Burnt ends were tangy, sweet and charred to perfection. My only suggestion would be to make them more bite-sized. They are pretty big pieces but very good. Loaded mashed potatoes were also yummy. They speak for themselves. The chopped green onions on top were a nice touch. Red cabbage slaw was a no for me. It just tasted like slaw with vinegar. It didn't seem like much went into the recipe. The cornbread was incredible. Do not skip the maple butter. Eating while hot is the way to go. You will enjoy this! Banana Cream pie was tasty but nothing to write home about. It was just good but not excellent.
All in all, you're going to get extremely large portions (we ate leftovers for the 3rd time and still have a bit left), it's a family friendly establishment, great location, friendly staff, and just overall a great experience. I was really impressed with how they made the Dads feel special. Without a doubt, I am sure we...
Read moreOh my! You have to try this place!! For me, I like good food, a nice atmosphere and customer service is a must. This place has it all! We had a group lunch for work with 8 people, so we decided to order the meat by the pound to share and each get individual sides for ourselves. We had the brisket, link sausage and ribs. The brisket was very tender and flavorful. The link sausage was tasty. The ribs were delicious (personally my favorite part of the whole meal). They were very tender, fell off the bone and the pepper coating was amazing! They have 3 sauces to choose from on each table. The "Sweet Red" was my favorite. For my sides, I got the coleslaw and loaded potato mash. The slaw was purple cabbage, with just the right sweet with a slight sour and a good crunch. The loaded potato mash was terrific with bacon pieces throughout. Everything was so very good! The atmosphere is different than most BBQ places. It's nostalgic meets hipster (in a good way). They have an open concept with plenty of tables inside. They also have a nice covered patio with fans that wraps around the front and the side with a little play area for kids. There are items for purchase throughout the restaurant like koozies, t-shirts, sauces, hats, etc. During our stay, we heard a little bit of everything over the music speakers. True Texas Country like "My Hometown" by Charlie Robison and also Johnny Cash's cover of "Personal Jesus" and similar music between. One of the coolest things was a loop of a black and white old western called "The Gabby Hayes Show". It was presented by a projector on the walls. I had never heard of this so I did some research after our meal. The first episode of this old show was in 1950. I loved this nostalgic piece of the atmosphere. Very different and unique. The service is excellent. We were greeted warmly, our order was taken with a smile and we were offered suggestions about the menu. A++++++++ job! Thoroughly enjoyed this establishment. We don't work on this side of town, but we had heard good things, so we decided to take a short drive to see if the hype was real. It is real! Go...
Read moreSo disappointed. Started with a the girl taking orders acted as though she did not want to be there and then I noticed that there was so many things out and “not available” such as a stuffed baked potato and complementary cookies for kids meal (which the girl could’ve mentioned at the beginning of the order) Then went to the drink station to see the lemons looked so bad like they’d been thru a shredder.. then the Dr. Pepper tasted so bad I could t even drink it ( the drink station obviously needs to be deep cleansed and maybe soda lines cleaned or something) then went outside to to wait for our meal and noticed the play area, and this area should hardly be referred to as a play area, as it is just an enclosed area with a flimsy plastic and very breakable climbing type toy (maybe $30 at target type toy) made for none over 5-10lbs… Then we got our meal and the children’s meals were fine but my Feges burger was absolutely horrible due to the riot sauce is disgusting and should be on the side as it is too sweet and ruins the burger the loaded mashed potatoes were completely dry and unseasoned, the chicken was too dry and they really need to try again with all those sauces (horrible sweet sauces) the broccoli cheddar soup was also gross basically this whole visit was horrible and I can’t believe we spent $100 and only the kids ate well ( a grilled cheese and chicken tenders are hard to mess up tho) .. do not go to this spot thinking you are getting a good quality meal or even drinks or soup for that matter just over all very displeased. I am definitely questioning the source that sent me there AND all of the accolades…
After posting I stopped to read all the reviews and the owner is clearly an immature little girl who has no interest in hearing her community (who pays her bills) and fixing the problems. Never really hoped a place failed until reading her nasty, salty unprofessional comments back to patrons who just WASTED their hard earned money on a horrible place with horrible food and horrible ownership. The owners attitude definitely explains the...
