I typically turn my nose up to any place that tries to mix two unrelated cuisines in its name. Thai AND sushi? Are they mad? Well... I recall one of my favorite burgers being from a place called "Best Burger & Fried Rice" so I gave Ginger Thai & Sushi a chance... I was not disappointed.
I arrived at noon and was happy to see open tables abroad. I was promptly perched at the sushi bar. Although the restaurant is bustling, the waitstaff seems to be on point. During lunch they offer "Curry of the Day". I requested to have the red curry instead of the yellow curry (COTD) and they swapped it out for me. The appetizer bar was a lot more delicious than I'd anticipated. The heating lamps worried me a bit, but the petri dish buffet did not stop me from trying everything (except for the sushi). I loved the egg rolls, tempura, the salad with my choice of ginger dressing, and the delicious tom kha gai soup. There is something very homemade about the soups and I could have filled up on the appetizer bar alone.
My food's arrival could not have been timed better. The red curry was piping hot and sat next to an extra large mound of rice.
Two words of warning... The curry is stupid hot. Temperature hot. I burnt my tongue several times before giving up and letting it cool down. The curry is stupid hot. SPICY hot. My mouth was on fire and fanning yourself in public is not cute. I enjoyed about 1/4 of the delicious red curry before I called it quits.
Parking is a cinch because of their private lot. Had I known this, I wouldn't have parked 2 blocks away at Lupe Tortilla. The prices are a bit steep, with lunch specials being around $11 or $12, but that's a small price to pay to get a more than decent Thai fix. I didn't mess with their sketchy sushi, and the curry was so good that I totally forgive them for weird hodgepodge of food. Just stay away from the sushi, and stick with the Thai food. You'll be "burning" for more before...
Read moreGinger Thai, I have 3 words. And it's not I love you. LUNCH APPETIZER BUFFET. Yes you read it right, a buffet! A word that will perk people's hears within a 50 ft radius that will have them gun for this place for lunch.
Located right off I-10, this place is easy to get to and the parking is plentiful. In addition to the spots right in front of the restaurant, there is also a bigger lot across the street. I've been here 2 times already by a recommendation from a friend and I cannot wait for my next visit.
I arrived at 11:45am on a Thursday and it was already bustling! My friend got us a table and as soon as I arrived, no words were even exchanged, we headed towards the buffet. With ample amounts of tempura, salad, fruits, sushi, spring rolls, and soups, you can feed your appetite to your heart's content. Everything is good! A star player for my lunch was the Tom yum soup. It was amazing, probably one of the best I've had. Did I mention my friend I ate with was Thai? And she approved, so we all know this place is legit.
Service is very quick too, our waitress took our order right away and our entrees came in a timely manner after we scarfed down our appetizers. I ordered the Thai Basil w/ beef and it was great. A bit spicy which I like with loads of onions, peppers and other veggies. My friend got the Pinto Thai which she also enjoyed.
Give this place a try for weekday lunch! It's quick, delicious and affordable. I paid $12 with tip for my entire...
