Texas Monthly did a piece on this hidden gem recently. Saw the article that morning, pulled up that afternoon. The place sits in a old shopping strip and that might discourage anybody. Once you get through that, the magic begins. Anyplace that has ready pagers and a consistent flow of patrons has to be the real deal! The food and the ambiance is a mismatch!
The haul:
Spicy two link boudin stuffed. (Yeah you read it right!) drink and chips.
Sausage with beans and dirty rice.
(Also two drinks and two deserts from Mama Mims. More on that later)
Understand this. If you would have told me that two boudin links could be split open and stuffed with chopped beef brisket, cheese, chives and sour cream in a baked potato container could work???? I would have called flag on the play. But naaaaaaw! This dish is like one of the greatest things I have ever tasted! The boudin has a great spice level. Might be a bit too much for some, but great for me. The toppings almost made me believe I was eating a baked potato. The combo is a hit!
Even the sausage plate was fresh and homemade. Nothing frozen. Made to order. Just how we all like it!
Mow Mama Mias is a separate entity from the restaurant, but that peach cobbler and that strawberry cheesecake was fire as well!
Basically, sometimes you have to go to the hole in the wall to get some of the best food sometimes. Wort a trip to the S.W.A.T to...
Read moreThis what REAL Barbecue is supposed to be like. I have to be honest, there are so many barbecue restaurants in Houston. Some really good, some not great. The trend now seems to be toward big fancy restaurants, decorated with bull horns and wagon wheels. Growing up, the best barbecue spots were always fixtures of the community. You could go there and it was always buzzing with activity. Most importantly, it was affordable. Stepping into Guillory's, I felt that hometown feel. It's not fancy, it's not new but look around and you can see evidence of people who love what they do. This is what those wagon wheel places are trying to be. When you walk into this place you are hit with the smell of smokey meats. I absolutely hate walking into a restaurant and smelling nothing. I got the chicken, ribs, brisket and boudain. Brisket was fall apart tender with a nice smoky bark. Sides were all good. But I have to say, the price was nice. It wasn't cheap but reasonable for barbecue. I tried to order everything on the menu. When I was there, a family was eating with their children. The owner asked how'd they hear about them... They said from the reviews.
Bottom line the...
Read moreI patronized this location on 7/1/23 evening time. Very slow. No customer In site, however the man at the counter medium dark skin tone sort of slim..maybe the owner? Not sure. just starred at me as I walked in & glanced at the menu on the wall. I was having a phone conversation at the time however you should still greet your customers…I ordered the Boudain which was ok. Honestly Tasted store bought. But had a nice smoke flavor making it a little better. After reading the reviews I read that it is DJ Boudain from Beaumont..you can buy that at the grocery store. As I said I figured it had a store bought taste. Then again the smoked flavor saved it. I would expect a more authentic Boudain as you can buy a pack of DJs out the grocery store for $3 they are charging $5 for one link. Which isn’t bad but…again it’s store bought nothing special. The young lady who was the cashier was friendly. Not sure if I would be back..maybe to try another barbecue entree. I would recommend greeting your customers & make them feel welcomed as it seems the business would benefit from it. First impression is important. It was possibly...
