I went to Rudy’s barbecue two days ago. I mentioned it to my Client and they raved about the cream corn and the service, I stopped by on my way home from work as I passed Rudy’s every day the young lady at the register was very short as far as interactions go not pleasant at all, I got 1/2 pound of brisket moist I got a brisket, sandwich, cream corn, and they order of potato salad, I was highly disappointed, but the young lady service was rude as hell! She got my brisket the half pound that is held it above the register and let it slap on the little weight in front of the register that tells you how many pounds I was disgusted and looked at the woman next to me, staring at the young lady as well I noted that it could’ve been very ugly very quickly as I was tired and already there I just stared at her for a good minute, not saying anything and she begrudgingly said sorry as she knew what she was doing. Start to finish the awkwardness of the stair and me waiting on some type of, something to let me know that you understand I am a customer paying customer that that my phone literally died so I said please back up my stuff and sit aside. I’ll be back in. Let me charge it because I’m paying via tap, I explained I only need to plug it in for about two minutes and I’ll be back in. She said that was perfectly fine and I went to charge my phone as soon as the Apple sign came on back to pay And I did that normally my phone holds 10%, which is more than enough time for a quick transaction. I paid darn near $40 for some dry brisket some corn and what tasted like mayonnaise, which was disgusting. The corn taste old and was Hard to chew the bread on the brisket sandwich had a aftertaste as if the bread was stored somewhere and was saturated with the taste of whatever it was in quite honestly, everything was a bust even the potato salad which did not have much flavor to it. I am not being mean I am just stating facts significant other everything and we ended up having to go and get something else for dinner. It was disgusting. Never try anything else from this establishment I think that her treatment and handling of my food maybe because I am African-American, but very well spoken if I do say so myself, I came in excited and I almost did my review for social media at that point they should be very glad that I did not ‼️ i’ve never had my food hand in my face to the point that other customers, both black and white look to the right to see my food on the weight that way, and stared for a moment because when I look to my left, did anybody else here or see that, we met eyes. I think that was a precursor and my phone shutting off at the precise time that I started to tap and pay. I feel in hindsight was trying to let me know this was not the right move! I will say this, the environment look welcoming most of the cashiers were leaning on the register, but I did get a greeting on the way out of the door by the cashier next to the door, as far as the young lady with the long ponytail and I think of Mexican or some sort of Latino descent, I don’t know what was going on with her day, but I’ve worked food service in the past and we all know it’s showtime when the customer come in you sure as hell do not slam or drop their food on the scale so much so that it makes a loud slapping noise where some of the meat actually touch the scale and after the stare down she goes I’m sorry it’s all on there. It’s a half pound… She should be very lucky that I was tired and ready to go home one out of 10 a big one and that’s generous for service as well as food. We were there for the brisket and it taste horrible as it was laid in the ashes which is shocking because I watched them slice fresh brisket, but I got old cold and dried out brisket even though we asked for moist salt barbecue sauce could help, especially since we only got two small packaged containers that were smaller than Domino’s Pizza ranch dipping sauces. This was a waste of my heart earned money and I usually give these places a second try but I will never set foot in Rudy’s BBQ...
Read moreRudy’s has been a nearby go to forever and while I feel the food doesn’t hit like it did back in the day, still a good bet. This is mostly about a bad employee experience we had.
When an Aunt returning to Houston after 10+ years was visiting and wanted bbq, we headed here. 7 adults, 2 kids. Arrived around 7:50 and asked if we could sit in the private room. Employee said sure, so we sat with our food by 8:10. Laughing, reminiscing. Then this big, dopey looking employee kept coming in awkwardly. Sometimes he’d just stand there, no eye contact, not one word or emotion. Just posed up between our tables - think Texas Chainsaw Massacre but like he was dementia lost. Then he’d touch the trash can and walked out. Like wth?? At his 8:45 walk in and stand appearance, my mom asked when they closed cause she didn’t know if was really having a slow mental day or tryna bully us out. He turned to leave and barked “9” so aggressively we were all taken aback. I chilled cause tbh thought maybe he was a special needs hire. Parked by the exit so my handicapped mom could get in and out easily but the doors were locked. When my brother asked if they could be opened to wheel my mom out, he said “They’re closed. Go to the front and walk around”. We were outside loading up by 8:50 but man, I have never felt so pushed out of a space. I’m sure he congratulated himself for getting us to leave but he made us wonder what vetting Rudy’s does when hiring. Everyone else we interacted with, great verbal communication! This guy disgusted my Aunt so much it literally made her food taste bad, so thanks for giving her that Rudy’s memory to take home. Perhaps y’all can let him know it is easier to be direct with words than creeper skulk and make guests feel like weirded out.
Ie. “Sorry we’d like to keep that section closed” or “good evening folks, we’d like to close this section but you’re welcome to move to the main dining area til we close at 9” (where there were still several diners!)
I’m sure we’ll be back cause it’s a convenient family spot but fyi...
Read moreI visited this Rudy's this past weekend while I was in Houston as recommended by a friend who used to live in the city. I came here for the food but they do have a storefront attached as well as a gas station - so interesting!
It was my first BBQ experience in Texas (first time in the state) and I was excited to try the popular brisket that Houston is known for.
The decor was lovely and the customer service was superb. Before walking up to the cashier, patrons are able to pick and choose their beverage of choice (soda pop, beer, etc.). Cold sides are refrigerated and easy for you to pick and choose what you would like prior to reaching the cashier as well.
I really appreciate that you get to try the meats before ordering. The cashier told me I could try the brisket lean (not recommended) and the turkey, which was delicious. I ended up ordering the the BRISKET MOIST (not recommended) and TURKEY (recommended) because I wanted a fatty brisket meat and the turkey was so flavorful. In addition, I also ordered the CREAM CORN (recommended), RUDY'S BEANS (mehh) and the BANANA PUDDING (decent; in refrigerated section).
My high rating is for my experience at Rudy's. The BRISKET MOIST was disappointing because it wasn't very moist. In fact, some parts were a bit dry. The TURKEY, however, was flavorful and juicy. I really enjoyed this and this meat was recommended by my cashier. The food was 3/5, unfortunately. I had high hopes for this place but I would come here again for ribs...if I ever visit...
