I wanted to give this place another shot before I left a review. Went once during lunch while at work with a coworker, another time on President's Day with my wife and kids.
Both times I visited we were promptly seated. The average age of the customer here is about 60; makes for some quiet meals which can be good. Not really date night but they have a very loyal customer base of older Hunstville residents who love the food.
The food is primarily southern-style cooking: fried chicken, baked chicken, Mac-n-cheese, green beans, yeast rolls etc. Very much channels the home cooking vibe but tends a little more cafeteria to me.
Our service has been excellent each time, most recently Samson was our server and he was excellent. Just the right amount of attentive and not pushy at all.
Food was a meh for me. My wife and kids liked it, as did my coworker, but I was not a fan. I wouldn't personally choose to go back here but wouldn't veto it.
They were out of chicken tenders for the kids meals when we visited most recently, which is weird because they had fried chicken and roast chicken -- I guess it isn't a high demand item and they buy frozen perhaps? They were also out of the printed kids menus (which were available as a PDF on their website) so this just goes to show you who the core demographic for customers happens to be.. Either way, both of my kids chose to get a bowl of mac and cheese, I got the Southern Fried Chicken and the wife got the Veggie plate.
Wife said her food was good for the most part, I enjoyed the fried chicken more than I did the chicken and dressing on the previous visit. My fried chicken was mixed, I enjoyed one piece and wasn't a fan of the other. I am definitely NOT a fan of the mashed potatoes. They include some skin in the potatoes and they have a thick consistency, I honestly think Idahoan makes better. The green beans and the corn was pretty decent. Wife really liked her strawberry and walnut salad (which was more akin to a jello brownie than a salad, definitely do some research before ordering). I am not a fan of the corn bread (unsweet and tends toward dry with minimal flavor), their yeast rolls are better. They have a few bottled beers and some wine, which is nice. Coke products to drink. Worth a shot but go with 'mid' expectations and prepare to be pleasantly surprised. If you're over 60, this could be your new...
Read moreFantastic dining experience at Walton's Southern Table. 4 out 5 and it's a really strong 4. Wife ordered the chicken fried chicken and I ordered the chicken and dressing. Sides ordered were mac and cheese, fried green tomatoes, broccoli salad, and mashed potatoes and gravy. We had both the yeast rolls and cornbread muffins with our meals.
Our server Matthew was definitely on his game. Very attentive and kept our cups full. You could tell he took pride in his job where so many others just do the bare minimum service wise. When we get great service we tip accordingly.
Chicken fried chicken was outstanding! So tender and delicious. Wife cut off a piece and it was definitely a bite of delight. I tried the broccoli salad, it was decent but not a side I would normally order. My wife enjoyed the broccoli salad very much. Fried green tomatoes were outstanding. My mom cooked these often in our home growing up and sometimes I enjoy them, sometimes I don't. I REALLY enjoyed these. Thin sliced tomatoes work very well. Nice seasoning in the coating with some cayenne pepper to add a little bite. The sauce they give you with the tomatoes is really good. I need that recipe asap!
I liked the chicken and dressing and mashed potatoes but they were just a bit under seasoned but I added a little salt and pepper and enjoyed both. Now the mac and cheese was a little disappointing. I love mac and cheese. This is noodles and cheese sauce. I also need to add that my mac and cheese was lukewarm. It was the first thing I tasted when our order arrived. Not very hot. Cornbread muffins were dry. My wife looked at me when I bit the muffin and asked me what was wrong. I told her to taste her muffin. She immediately recognized that it had a decent flavor but it wasn't fresh. I've worked in too many kitchens. Steam boxes, heat lamps, and holding times all play a factor in the quality of the food. When I tried the macaroni and the muffin I thought it was going to be a bad meal but everything else saved it.
Wife ordered the strawberry pretzel salad. I tried it and really enjoyed it. It's definitely a strong 4 and I have to mention that with everything we ordered we managed to get out for less than 40 dollars which actually surprised us. We've been averaging at least 30 dollars per person our last few meals so great service, really good food, and very affordable prices. We will most...
Read moreWent here with local family member, based on suggestion after I said I wanted soul or southern food. They close at 8:30pm and we arrived about 7:45, so i was a little worried. Place was almost empty.
I ordered chicken fried chicken, girlfriend had chicken fried steak, son had chicken strips, daughter had Mac and cheese.
Usually I expect restaurants to skimp on the kids meals, but unfortunately (?) Those were the highlights of the meal. Both chicken fingers and Mac and cheese were good by kids meal standards, including tender chicken.
Chicken fried chicken: Even in southern cooking, when everything is compartmentalized, where everything is in its own little cup or bowl, presentation matters. My cfc was a couple of underwhelming flat patties that looked like fat, flat, frozen fish sticks. It was lukewarm at best, along with my sides, spinach and mashed potatoes. None of that is appealing to me if not actually warm. My whole meal definitely went from freezer to microwave to table. Cornbread? Can it save the day? Not exaggerating, but took one bite and realized that I now truly knew what cardboard and sand taste like. This couldn't even be saved by warming in a microwave and putting butter on it. I can honestly say, without hesitation, that this was the worst corn bread that I have ever tasted in 50 years.
This whole meal tasted like it was prepared by someone without a care in life. They didn't care about food or cooking. They didn't care about being proud of their work. They didn't care about representing the restaurant, Huntsville and The South through their food. The whole of The South should be ashamed for them. If I didn't know what real southern cooking was, and this was my first time in the South, I'd be traumatized for life. Notwithstanding, I am traumatized, but have the good sense to understand that this abomination of concocted various bits of hastily slapped together floor droppings does not represent the long, storied and proud history of fine southern cooking.
Good day. Whoever made this food, bless your little heart.
Addendum: Some will ask why I didn't complain to my fine waiter? He was actually really good, and deserves accolades for his fine service. It was after 8pm, I didnt want to cause a scene, and didn't want to embarras our family member who had suggested the place...
