Independence Kansas today at lunch time on my way home. Saw this place on the way in to town at hit it on the way out. This place is a great find and worth the stop if between KC from Tulsa. Only a couple of miles off from the 169.
The place looked very low key and I was stopping in for a late lunch at 2pm so it was not busy when I arrived with only one other table with customers. Waitress was friendly and helpful. Ordered the 3 piece fried fish and 3 piece fried oysters with red beans and rice and green beans as sides. Service was fast
Food arrive and it was piping hit straight out of the dryer. The portion size was huge. 3 really big pieces of catfish and oysters. The breading was southern style with cornmeal. Breaking open the crust steam and juices came gushing out of the oysters. Delicious. The star today however was the catfish. Perfectly cooked and moist. Seasoning was spot on with the right amount of breading. Their tartar sauce was the perfect complement with the meal and the hush puppies were not shabby either. Sometimes some restaurants neglect their sides but not Sam's. They were taking care of business today. The green beans were pretty good but the red beans and rice was amazing. Get this this as a side if ordering a meal....highly recommended.
Sadly I was so stuffed I couldn't eat any more and had to pass on ordering the fried pies the waitress recommended. Will have to order a smaller meal next time to leave room...
Read moreI NEVER had been treated the way I was today at a restaurant. My family and I walked for a table of 6 people. it was crowded, it was lunch time. but there was open tables, big and small with chairs. The young waitress said she could not seat us and it would be 30 mins. I asked why, she said they didn't any chairs for us. In the Large room, there was a large table for 6 and it had 2 chairs. Next to this table was 2 smaller tables with 2 chairs each per table. That is total of 6 chairs with a large table. I pointed this out to the younger waitress and she got an attitude with me and said, if I move those chairs, then we cannot seat people there to feed. I'm standing here with 6 people who are ready to eat. An another lady, was not helpful either and agreed with the younger lady. We decided to leave, it want until we were walking out the door the owner comes up and tries to fix the problem. Now, I have ate here once before and the food is fabulous. I was looking forward to introducing my other family members to this restaurant. I understand that a large party is difficulty to sit. However, the attitude was not needed and we were not the only ones who noticed. Other customer's who were seated with their food noticed too and one customer said there is plenty of chairs for your family. We will not be back. My family's food bill would of been at least $120 plus tip.. Sam's you...
Read moreI really enjoyed my meal at Fish and Shrimp Diner and rate it overall a 4/5!
Food: The food was great! I got a double hamburger (I don’t like cheese), fries and onion rings and the food was still warm when I finished shooting and I was pretty stuffed. I spent just over $20 for everything, which I think was a good price! Now, this is categorized as a seafood restaurant but I didn’t try it. But, if you’re looking for classic diner food, I can speak to that, and I thought it was great.🙂
I will say that I was going to get the jumbo shrimp but I remember looking at the price and not finding it worth it..maybe that’s the price to pay for seafood in the Midwest, I’m not sure!
Service: I make videos for social media and they were ok with me filming! They even turned down the music for me and let me take my own section until I was done! They were quick, and so very kind and the owners were pretty stellar as well! Very humble people!
Atmosphere: The atmosphere let in a lot of light and there were paintings on the wall from previous guests, that I like. Overall, I think they added a nice touch! Nothing crazy, pretty...
