Slyman's Tavern Independence — Restaurant in Independence

I litterally googled “family friendly” restaurants and this came up first. Ok- where to start… asked for a high chair and it was the dirtiest most disgustingly dirty high chair I’ve ever seen and I did ask for a wet rag and one of the servers (wished I had her for my server) was very kind and gracious to clean off the high chair for us and she was apologetic about how dirty it was. Then we waited a good 10 minutes in the meantime another table of 3 men sat down. The server took care of them right away and then turned to me and was very rude about taking my order didn’t wait for me to give my order and took forever to come back with some water. I ordered a drink as she was walking away as soon as the water glass touched the table and then ten minutes later she told me they don’t make that standard drink. I was like what can you recommend and she got a huge attitude about it but I said yes to the first drink she said which was a lemon drop. The other table of men got top notch service while I got neglected because I brought my baby with me. Then when I ordered a corn beef sandwich she was like “do you want cheese or not?” And I was like idk I just want it how it comes? She was so rude about how people order it both ways and I said I’ve never been here before and she said “well do you like cheese?” With a tone like I was dumb. I said that sounds fine I’ll take it like that. Asked for my bill asap and payed and tipped 20% and then asked for a box to go home. I just was so uncomfortable there and I had to keep swatting away flys off of my son. Gross! I did thank the waitress who helped me with the high chair on my way out. It was weird enough experience to inspire me to leave this review and take a picture to prove it! The corn beef did seem pretty good- minus the flys swarming around- but I’ll be going to Joes deli in my neighborhood instead of going here after my sons weekly doctor appointments...

A friend and myself have never been to a Slyman's before, and it's pretty doubtful that we will ever go again...at least this location. Seeing that the price of the "just" corned-beef sandwich was $11.99 (which includes only a pickle, no fries or sides included), we asked our server how big the "Orig" size was and she said that it was huge and that she always has leftovers for that next day too. I wanted one but with cheese, which was $15.99! So we went for it, thinking that it was going to be MONSTROUS. My friend ordered his on wheat bread and a side of fries, I just had the sandwich on rye. About 10-15 minutes later, our orders come out and, I don't know about my friend's thoughts, but I was thoroughly disappointed to the small size of the sandwich halves...it wasn't puny, but it wasn't the mega-sized sandwich that I'm used to seeing at other corned-beef outlets. Anyway, half-way through his sandwich, my friend noticed that our sandwich's bread looked the same and says, "Wait, didn't I order mine on wheat?" They had made his with rye bread also, so we motioned for our server to come over. She admitted that she heard him say "wheat" but forgot to write it down, then says, "I'm such a f**k-up." My friend and I were caught off-guard for a second. After that, she said, "Well, if you want, I can bring you out 2 pieces of wheat bread, it won't be toasted or anything though." We were both astounded at that suggestion, and naturally, he declined. After she left, I asked him how the fries were and he said, "Eh, they're okay," and offered me to try one...and just like the other reviewers, they had NO taste, NO seasoning of any kind, and NO salt...which should be a crime against humanity! Luckily, the sandwiches tasted good or I'd give this place a worse rating; however, the damage has been done. Good luck to this establishment...they do have a nice...

The only reason this place received a star at all is the food was good. The service was awful. Any party of six or more automatically includes gratuity, we had eleven. Probably the reason why they didn't feel it was necessary to do a good job. For starters the server was yelling in my ear to get everyone's orders, instead of walking around the table to hear everyone. When she came back to the table she kept handing drinks and food to me to pass down to the whole table, instead of walking around. There was plenty of room to walk around and reach the rest of the party. I don't know what anyone ordered they were at the other end of the table. The manager made excuses and said she needed help, but then walked away and didn't help her employee. Another employee came out with one of the appetizers and proceeded to try hand off the food that was for the other end of the table, six seats down a rectangle table. Two times they brought food to our table that wasn't ours. An Appetizer still missing and some drinks never refilled after asked twice. Multiple times the server yelled in my ear to get the attention at the other end of the table. We asked for boxes and the checks and still had to wait approximately another thirty minutes for that. Half of the checks were incorrect, even though it was stated before we ordered there were going to be separate checks. Another ten minutes wait for the correction. Not at one point did they take away empty dishes off the table to keep things tidy and to have more room. Multiple times our server stated she would be right back with something and went straight to another table and didn't return until the manager was called upon. I hate...
