My wife and I were in Indianapolis for the 2024 Eclipse. It was one of those rare moments in life that didn't disappoint. It was magical and profound in ways I can barely even put into words. And I'm still thinking about the pizza.
We were experiencing a bit of culture shock being in a place with friendly people and good food (since Bellingham is the opposite of those things) but we managed to venture out into the city the morning of the eclipse looking for breakfast. The place we had chosen had filled up; we were told there was an hour wait. There was, however, a pizza place around the corner opening in three minutes so we decided to go for it.
When we walked up, there was someone unloading pizzas onto a cart, but the sign and the hours on the door both indicated they were closed on Mondays. Confused, we started to look for the site that said they were open that day. Before we could figure it out, though, a lady came out and, seeing our confusion, confirmed they were open and invited us in for lunch.
I cannot stress enough how much something like that would -NEVER- happen in Bellingham. And boy howdy am I glad I wasn't in Bellingham, because if I had been, I would have missed out on the best pizza I've ever eaten in my life.
I mean that. I had not ever had pizza that good before in my life, and I suspect I never will again. This pizza will haunt me for the rest of my days. I was in Indiana for a once-in-a-lifetime event and I doubt the path of my life will ever carry me back there. And that I why I write it down here, gentle reader, so that if you find yourself in similar circumstances you do not squander the opportunity.
For our meal, we ordered a 16" Riverside Drive pizza and a small order of Garlic Knuckles. It was the smallest size offered and about comparable in price to a two-person meal in Bellingham, so we figured it would be enough for the both of us. What we got was easily a four-person meal.
The Garlic Knuckles were thick strips of their pizza crust, tied into a knot as big as my fist with a long tail off each side, drenched in garlic butter. The pizza was topped with exactly the right amount of rich tomato sauce, and enough pepperoni, sausage, bacon, onions, and peppers that there wasn't a bare spot on the pie. The spoon-sized dollops of ricotta were interspersed about regularly enough that any slice had enough to either spread over the top or just bite right into.
The pizza crust is, in a word, perfect. It's fluffy and light, with enough chew to it that it can handle all the toppings without breaking. The flavor is rich like old-culture sourdough with a savory undertone that's the same as you get on a really good pretzel. For the rest of the trip, we kept asking if we should cancel our other restaurant plans and just go back for more pizza. Part of me is wishing we had. The pizza was so good, it was still amazing after a day and re-warmed in a hotel microwave.
Further surprises awaited us once we had finished stuffing ourselves with all we could handle (which still only amounted to half of what we'd ordered). When we were presented with the check, the server also gave us each a pair of eclipse glasses for free. Someone at the restaurant had planned ahead, knowing people would be in town for the event, and decided to do something nice for the customers. Then, when we left, we found an employee placing a bowl of water outside for any dogs that happened to come by. Again, these are things that would never happen in Bellingham, where customers are treated as little more than alcohol sponges.
While in Indiana, I had the best pizza of my life, followed by almost four minutes of perfect beauty. If everyone in Indiana didn't drive like they were auditioning for the Indy 500 (seriously, slow it down, people), I would have assumed the whole vacation was some kind of dream. It's going to be twenty years until the next eclipse, but if you're anywhere near Indiana, you shouldn't sleep...
Read moreThanks for nothing Brozinni Pizzeria I had to fix dinner when my husband was going to order out. This happened.
LIKE BEING HUNG UP ON BROZINNI PIZZERIA AT SPEEDWAY IS FOR YOU!! I cannot imagine that their inside service is any better. I live basically around the corner from them and I have been wanting to try this place since they opened. My wife has celiacs, which almost killed her, and Brozinni Pizzeria’s website plainly states that cross contamination is highly likely, so I have not had a good opportunity to try them. However tonight Friday 13 September 2024, I was going to order the fried mushrooms and 2 pizzas for my son who had just returned from the marines, me, and a friend. I never even got close to completing the order I did not even get my first pizza in. I called Brozinni Pizzeria at Speedway at 6:30 p.m. A very friendly young person answered the phone, I asked if I could get their Canal Street specialty pizza and substitute the sausage for the sliced Boar’s Head ham. She asked what size and I said the 16-inch. She then said that they do not do substitutions (it does not state that on the website) and she asked if it was going to be alright to charge me for the sliced ham. I asked if it would be discounted or full price and she said full price and I said no, do not charge me for it. So she asked if I still wanted the sausage, which I hate sausage, and I said no thank you just cancel the order. At that point she became angry, and she said you do not want to get the pizza now? I said I am sorry but I do not want to pay for a topping I am not going to eat. She became angrier and said I could just order a pizza and just add each individual topping that you wanted. I tried to say for a lot more money but she cut me off and snidely said that way you can get what you want!!!! She immediately hung up on me. Wow, all in all I just wanted good customer service but I did not get...
Read moreI really want to like this place. I love this location, and was a fan of 1911. I read the great reviews for the other location. First encounter , my wife and I ordered a build your own pizza and an order of the (much touted) garlic knuckles for pick up. The pizza was just plain weird tasting. The crust was soggy and gross. The garlic knuckles were flavorless. The butter and garlic had run off the knuckles and pooled in the bottom of the container, even when dipped in the aforementioned butter would not adhere. The meal was on the pricey side as well. So after I had a hard time talking my wife into trying them a second time. I reasoned that they were new and deserved a second chance. So the second time we got a table instead of ordering togo. First the good, the owner was there, and was very friendly and accommodating. The place was vey load, but they were busy. The service was so so, but they were busy. This time we ordered one of their signature pizzas (extra crisp crust this time), also the deep fried ravioli, and a second try for the (much ballyhooed) garlic knuckle . Unfortunately the pizza was again soggy and not very tasty. The garlic knuckles were still not very good (no flavor) Even the fried ravioli did not impress. Or top of that the charge craft beer prices for poor selection of domestic beer (draft). This has been a month or so, and I still want to give this place another try, but I cant convince my wife to go back there (or anyone else that was in our party that night. I am still seeing good reviews and wondering why. You can get a much better pizza across the street...
