I am so disappointed to write this review on this seemingly beloved restaurant, but the way we were treated here tonight was unacceptable.
This was my first experience at Capri. While I was born and raised in the Indy area, I no longer live in Indiana but return often. However, my entire family lives here, as well as my extensive friend and professional network, and I was excited to try this place out. I have heard great things about it and when it was suggested by my mom as a girls night to celebrate her end of chemo treatments it sounded like the perfect place.
We made our dinner reservation for our party of 3 at 4:30pm as to get there early to avoid as many people as possible since my mom is immune compromised as a cancer patient.
We were running behind due to traffic and called at 4:40pm to let them know, to which we were told okay and "we will mark you down as late".
We arrived before 4:50pm, were greeted with a couple of extremely unfriendly and unwelcoming girls at the hostess stand and told they needed the table vacated by 6:30pm. Never in my life have I ever been told how long a table was available to us, but, no problem. It was before 5:00pm at that point and 6:30pm was over 90 minutes away.
We were seated at a lovely table right by the fireplace. We sat down and were poured water, began to peruse the menu, napkins in lap and settled when Liv (Liz?) the head rude/unwelcoming hostess comes over to our table and tell us she has to MOVE US to another table with zero explanation.
What??!! Is this a joke?!
Shocked, we gather our stuff and get up and move from the fireplace table, which by the way, we never asked for that specific table in the first place. I asked why we were being moved and Liv/Liz says it's because another party is coming in earlier than expected.
Our night was saved by our wonderful server Jason who was very pleasant and we enjoyed very much. He was very nice, chatty, knowledgeable, and accommodating. Outside of the company, he was the best part of the night.
However, I will never, ever return to this restaurant and will make sure to tell any and everyone about this experience and recommend never wasting their time here.
The owner walked around the dining room and greeted guests and never made an effort to come to our table to explain or apologize.
Oh, and if you were wondering, the table we were moved from at 4:50pm was not seated by the guests that were "arriving earlier than expected" until 6:35pm.
This place is classless. 10/10 do...
Read more4 1/2 stars. My colleagues and I go to a different restaurant every year for Christmas dinner. Last year, we dined at The Northside Social (soooo good!!!). This year, we decided to go Italian, and had the pleasure of dining at Capri last night.
Emma was our server. She seemed a bit nervous initially, but warmed up and provided a classic dining experience. She explained the dishes thoroughly, and was tactful (not pretentious) when some of us mispronounced selections from the menu—clearly having no idea what we were ordering. She was attentive without lurking, and did a great job representing the restaurant.
There was an unnamed staff person who made sure our water glasses remained filled. It was nice not ever having to ask. Thank you, mystery man!
The owner Andrew made an appearance in the dining room, and greeted us. That was both unexpected and welcoming to have him check on how we were doing. We’ve had many delightful experiences at holiday time, but never had a chef or owner personally greeted us.
About the food: Everyone raved about their antipasti, their main dishes, and about the variety of offerings. We weren’t expecting the lamb as one of the specials. That was definitely a pleasant surprise, and a delicious one, too. The food portions were perfect; nearly everyone cleared their plates and were satisfied without being stuffed.
The dessert left a little to be desired. This is where we had to deduct a 1/2 star. The tiramisu was well received. The creme brûlée needed to set a bit more, and be more carmelized (but the flavors were fantastic). The lemon sorbet was the best one person had ever had. The strawberry ice cream was reported to taste not freshly made. We would recommend that a bit of attention be paid toward updating the dessert selections Ice Cream should always be delicious.
Overall, the eight of us agreed that we would return, and recommend Capri to other...
Read moreIt goes to show a server can make or break your experience of a restaurant. Our server had zero hospitality or finesse, at least towards us. He barely acknowledged us upon arrival, didn't ask us if we were first time guests (which we were) or if we were celebrating a special occasion (which we were and I noted it on my reservation). Both of which at least tell a table you give a rip. Absolutely zero 🦊 given.
He didn't explain the menu or offer us any recommendations. He took forever (no less than 10 minutes) to bring a diet coke for my husband and never offered a refill the entire night. He was rude when I ordered a bottle of wine for the table and snapped "you know that's a bottle, right?" I understand he thought that the wine was just for me, and that I was ordering beyond what I needed just for me, but there is a way to communicate the same thing without making your guest feel confronted and uncomfortable.
At the end of the night someone from management finally acknowledged our table but by then we had already been there for 2 hours and it was 'too little, too late'. Food was decent but nothing super memorable. The SOMM Selects wine list was very helpful, as navigating Italian wines can be quite overwhelming!
I am willing to give the place another try, giving the benefit of the doubt, despite the lackluster service, I was very generous with our tip... It was Christmas Eve afterall! And I did appreciate that someone was there to serve us instead of being with their family. I would gather from the reviews that this was not a typical experience at this place and I understand the hospitality industry is in shambles right now. I took a risk by not celebrating my husband's birthday at one of our go-to places and I am left understandably disappointed in...
