Oh how it is ALWAYS such a treat to go to the World FAMOUS Long's Bakery. This is the Sputhport Road location. I've always had FAST, ACCURATE, AND PLEASANT services here, even when the place is buzzing with people, packed wall to wall, and a line out the door AND around the building!! It has ALWAYS BEEN WORTH THE WAIT (except the one time I stayed in line for 45 minutes, only to remember that I had not brought cash and only had debit cards....ugggg) Yes, although they've been serving freshly made doughnuts, pastries and deserts for 50 years (I think that's what I read), they've kept their shop having a small town feel, where time just seems to stop. Idk why I always feel like I've been transported back to the 50's, but I often do. They start making today's tasty treats.. Well...TODAY. They will keep their doors open until 8p.m., unless they've sold out of today's treats. On this particular visit, I arrived around 7p.m.,I was the only person there and didn't have to wait in line or feel rushed to make my order... as you'll see in my photo, there were not a lot of different things to choose from--& that's my fault, I've been going to them for years and I know that popular items are sold out of long before 8p.m.! This particular day, I was lucky!!! They had an alligator cake left and these are my FAVORITE! As always, I was treated with a smile, and was served exactly what I ordered. I love that the place reminds me of Mayberry, and that they've taken sweet and decadent deserts, cookies, pies, brownies, and never forget the APPLE FRITTERS--& LONG'S has mastered their tasty recipe. If you visit ANY day of the week before 11 a.m., give yourself plenty of time (especially Saturday and Sunday, where I've seen the line wrap around the building), allow yourself an hour or more to kill, maybe bring a cup of Joe and the morning's paper to enjoy and just know that you are likely going to be standing in line for a while, but don't let that bother you--if you've been here before-- you never get annoyed by the wait---you already know and accept this because it's well worth it, and you know your likely going to do it again next weekend, though, I suggest allowing your bf, husband or wife, or your child of driving age to run this errand for you once in a while--you know, so they can appreciate the full experience of Long's Bakery also. AND DO NOT FORGET THAT IT'S A CASH ONLY BAKERY! NO...
Read moreSome of the locals said that I needed to go here. This confused me because it's a donut shop and it's cash only, which is weird in this day and age. But it's not far from the hotel, and it's Sunday morning, so why not?
The parking lot was pretty much full, and there were so many people in line, but I wasn't terribly impressed yet.
I ordered about 6 random donuts. It cost me less than 8 bucks. Not bad. But I still wasn't that impressed. We took the box out to the car, planning on eating them later and went to a restaurant for breakfast.
We went and walked off breakfast and went back to the hotel for naps and I ate my first donut. It was pretty much a cinnamon roll that was glazed. But it was surprisingly good. So I reached back into the box and pulled out the filled long john with chocolate icing. Again, what is going on? I've eaten plenty of long johns before, but how did they manage to get so much cream into it? It was better than any other long john I've ever had, and it got all over my face. I literally had to go wash up after it.
The wife was still asleep, so I pulled my third donut out of the box. They called it an eclair. It looked like the back of an alligator that was covered in chocolate. What freaking sorcery are they using back there? Flaky pastry like a croissant, covered in chocolate and filled with custard. This didn't take it to a whole new level. It took it to a level above that whole new level. This is the kind of eclair that I will build into every future trip to Indianapolis. I know I'm going to get cravings for this thing.
Long story short, the locals were right about this place. This is...
Read moreI've heard nothing but positive things about Longs Bakery from family friends, coworkers, colleagues and associates. So, when I take my daughter there after deciding to have a Father and Daughter bonding experience I was expecting great things. Needless to say that wasn't the case at all! The store itself is sitting off Southport Rd. In town and you'll miss it if you're not using gps or paying attention. Also, the inside was not inviting or hospitable at all. The lady that helped us was very nice and polite plus she interacted with my autistic daughter with great customer service. However, she was the positive thing that came out of this experience. The donuts did not taste fresh, they were nothing but sugar and or icing. Yes, I understand that doughnuts are supposed to be sweet but these things have me a sugar high like no other! My daughter felt sick to her stomach after just eating half of a twist. Thank the deities we had some milk to wash it down. I was really looking forward to the hype and experience everyone I talked to about this place had. I heard that the other Longs downtown Indy is the one you should go to, so maybe after a few I'll try that one but, the Southport location just isn't it. Sorry Long's Bakery. I know your a...
