Short's Burger & Shine — Restaurant in Iowa City

Went into this restaurant for the first time with my family. Place was small, waiting for a booth to open up was a bit of wait, but, it was a Saturday evening. The dining area was small, the place was packed and there was limited seating booths; But, I found the atmosphere to be quite pleasant, and I liked the intimate feel of the place.

Our burgers were brought out to us, the fries were fantastic and the burger was delicious as everyone of my family members would agree.

Downfall of the place was that our waiter was busy, but it wasn't an excuse for the unsatisfactory service that we received from him. We had to wait until he whizzed on by us for the tenth time in order for us to stop him and ask him if we could get refills on our drinks. As the waiter had past by our table several times it was more than obvious that he noticed that our classes were empty for almost a complete hour since our drinks were first served to us, and he did not once offer us a refill on our drinks. We did not receive a refill until he past by us again and I had to stop him in his tracks just to receive a refill.

When dining out, you're not only paying for the food, but you're also paying for a standard of service which we did not receive in this restaurant. The burger was very tasty, loved the garlic sauce for the fries and the same garlic sauce topped on the burgers, but my family and I were not satisfied with the soggy bun that got wet and fell apart in our hands before we were even able to finish eating the burger.

Unfortunately, this place disappointed me to the greatest degree possible. My roommates and I ordered burgers for carryout. I, being allergic to eggs, ordered a burger without any mayo or egg related product to avoid a possible reaction. Upon arriving home with the food we found that they had made the wrong burger for me. This one had mayo, which would have landed me in the hospital had I eaten it unknowingly. This sort of thing happens all the time in the food industry, so I wasn't too upset. We went back to the restaurant to see if we could get the order fixed and to my disappointment, they were not so cooperative. The bartender/manager proceeded to take the receipt out of my hand, and tell me that there was nothing he could do. At this point I was a little upset. I continued home and decided to give them a call, to see if I could straighten this out with someone else. Unfortunately, the man that turned me away was the one running the phones. After confirming that I was the one who came in to have this whole thing fixed, he said, and these are the exact words, "We advise our customers to look at the menu before ordering, so sorry we can't compensate for a customers mistake." and proceeded to hang up on me. This left a little bit of a sour taste in my mouth. After taking my money, and hanging up on me, I will surely never be giving this establishment my business ever again. To anyone in the downtown Iowa City area looking for a good burger, I would advise trying out Atlas or Quinton's. Both have astounding burgers, AND...

It’s downtown, the food I received was below mediocre, I got the tingley and substituted the burger for chicken, that may be my fault and I will return to get a burger but the chicken is completely unseasoned though it was cooked very well, most of the fries were chewy and undercooked and one of them was to the point of raw potatoes, the green chili sauce is practically flavorless, the guac is mostly avocado taste which to me is perfect but others may prefer otherwise, the ranch is comparable to hidden valley, lettuce was slightly wilted but nothing egregious, mango sauce was exactly what i expected and was pretty good, I’d give the cooked fries a 4 star but so many were so undercooked it’s an overall 2 for the fries, the chicken was literally plain chicken which id score a three stars for the sandwich overall, servers did their job but the tables are really dirty which is not good, decoration of the place was really nice, will try burgers at other location.
