THIS IS THAT PLACE!!!
Finally a place that is truly honest and great!!
As a little back story. Was our engagement week with the girl of my dreams. Absolutely on point to make sure our week is the best: self chartered boats in Miami and the Keys, snorkeling, fishing, sailing, camping (may have lost some of you), and engaging. Even got to be that little tiny boat you always see on the horizon at sunset from the road. (A must!)
One morning we get up in the rain to go find this "cool" café. We pull up and see this place trying to be hip with all their destinations sign and vibrant colors. We run inside and are instantly thrown smiles and hello's people being paid to smile..... Never mind, I was trying to be funny, and realized it just sounded dumb.
Honestly, that place is a vibrant beacon halfway between Miami and Key West. It is an honest creative effort on behalf of the owner and family which directly reflects in their hospitality and food. Their smiles are legit and not just ushered up as superficial utterance. This is a café run by, worked by, and cared for by the owner. I do not know the know the relationship of the others that work there, but their harmony and kindness can truly be felt. The food is simple and delicious. They evidently put the BLT on the menu not as a staple, but because someone there finally knows how to make one in this world. Hat's off to you. And the 'Holy Cow' is justly named.
I love surprises. I love how this place proved not to be everything I think everybody else is. I love the surprise of genuine love for what one does and does well. I love being made to feel part of that when I sit down at a table.
I hope the sincerity and/ or silliness of my review will at least prompt you to visit Midway Café out of curiosity alone. I promise you that you will not be disappointed: surprised maybe. They were crucial in the part of making that week the best one possible. It's the little things that can make the biggest impact.
P.s. Nicole, there are women in Tennessee sitting up in their graves over your meringue and crust in the Key Lime Pie. The meringue had a honey sweetness filled droplet off the whipped end like scorpion before the sting. That was the first and only thing that comes to mind about the meringue. The filling, I'll leave up to another that can do it justice. Thank you so much!! We'll send...

Read more3/14/35—My husband's friends, who had been staying at our rental house, were leaving today. While my husband and some other friends rented a sailboat and left around 7am , I decided to join our two friends for breakfast before they headed out. I had my heart set on a Cuban restaurant, but we couldn’t find it. Instead, we stopped at this place simply because it was nearby and convenient for them. I wasn’t thrilled about the change of plans—when I’m in Florida, I like to have a proper Cuban breakfast.
As soon as we walked in, the first thing I noticed was the line. Here, you order first, then they bring the food to your table. On the way to the register, there were little souvenirs for sale—cute trinkets and framed signs with funny and wise advice such as “we don’t have WiFi here “ took spices of it . The menu was charming, well-organized, and despite having a lot of options, it wasn’t overwhelming. As I got closer to the register (which didn’t take long), I spotted a bunch of fresh bananas. For a brief moment, I felt guilty—I should have been thinking about ordering a smoothie, but I didn’t. The bananas remained there, looking abandoned and slightly betrayed.
I ordered scrambled eggs with a pancake and ham, along with a café con leche, which, I have to admit, was quite good. My friends' meals also looked great. The total for the three of us was around $72. The restaurant has a small indoor seating area but plenty of outdoor seating.
Just as we were finishing our meal, a septic and plumbing truck pulled up, and they started some kind of cleaning. Thankfully, it was at the end of our breakfast—great timing. There were also way too many people with their dogs. Now, I love dogs, and they were all adorable, but that was the problem—they were too cute. I kept getting distracted from my meal.
In the end, although this stop wasn’t part of my plan and I wasn’t too happy about it at first, I was...
