I'm updating my original review just to double-down. Takos Borukas is the absolute best Mexican restaurant in town, and there are a lot of other great Mexican spots in Jackson. Most notably, some of the best Mexican food in Jackson comes from the local food trucks, and I think that's Takos Borukas' secret sauce.
They started as a food truck, and I don't think they ever let that "hustle" mentality wane. They're the BEST because they obviously work hard to be the best. I've been to this restaurant about 50 times over the years, and they have not disappointed ONCE. That kind of consistency and quality doesn't happen by accident. These folks are committed to excellence.
The parking lot can still be a little tight, but they've recently expanded into the suite next door, leading for fewer other businesses sharing the limited lot space. Parking is much easier now.
With the new space came a bar as well. I've not had any drinks at Borukas yet, but I've had friends tell me that their drink options are excellent.
I left my original review below, because most of it still applies:
First thing's first. The parking lot? Mid at best. If there's any sort of crowd, good luck finding a parking spot easily. Everything else though? Literally the best Mexican restaurant in town. I'm a Don Pancho diehard, but you've just gotta recognize greatness. North Los Portales may have Takos Borukas beat on atmosphere and decor, but as far as an actual dining experience? Takos Borukas is the best. Bar none. Service is solid. Food is mind-blowing. Even if you're passing through Jackson on I-40, it's worth stopping just for some quality food on a road trip. Again, I've made some rounds with the big name Mexican restaurants in the area, and this one stands on top. Primo to the south of I-40 is solid food but with a lacking atmosphere. The only other spot I could recommend on par with Borukas would be El Vallarta, but you need to drive all the way out to Trenton for that. Even then, Borukas is way more consistent in their quality. If you're feeding a group with varied tastes, this is the place to go. Some spots have better specialties, but no place is an all-rounder quite like Borukas. My current favorite is their Papas Lokas. The green and red sauces go well on everything. If you snag tacos, don't be afraid to try some of their different meat options too! (When they have it, their lengua might actually...
Read moreI predict this will not only soon be voted the #1 Mexican restaurant in Jackson, if not already, but also maintain that spot for some time to come. This place outweighs other Mexican restaurants, hands-down, in several areas.
First of all, their menu offerings exceed one's imagination. With dishes such as Tacos de Lengua, Papas BBQ, and Molkajete Seafood, Takos Baracus surely offers even the most difficult to please guests, something new to experience. If dining with multiple guests, Bracero is an obvious selection. Not only economically feasible, this dish offers a variety of food for everyone. With more than ten pages of items, one is surely able to find alike, both well-known dishes as well as menu items that are hard to find in Jackson.
The service is excellent, both in quality and speed of service. The wait-staff are not only friendly and pleasant to interact with, but remain intently focused on their guests and their experiences, ensuring a positive dining experience. The staff, ever mindful of their guests, are quite likely to remember your menu selection from your last visit. The servers are often helpful with suggestions as well.
Takos Borukas's pricing is unbeatable and more than fair. Any guest should be able to eat a satisfying and great quality meal for under $20.00, which is hard to find in Jackson. They could easily command a higher price for the majority of dishes, although the business appears to be thriving. They have plans to double the seating capacity in the upcoming months. Take-out business makes up a large portion of this business as well. However, the dining experience is the best method to enjoy a more authentic meal. Terrific...
Read moreI really liked this place. The decor and paintings were great looking all hand painted. The bathrooms were decently clean even though the place obviously got alot of foot traffic. The food was above par. The only reason I did not give this place 5/5 stars was because of two reasons.
The waitor wasn't the friendliest and was somewhat dismissive as if they had something better to do than to serve us or answer questions like we were supposed to know exactly how dishes were prepared made and served. He also never offered a booster seat or child seat when our kiddo was clearly having issues reaching food without having to stand in the chair (so of course he was being rambunctious because he got to stand and eat which added difficulty for us to eat and enjoy our meal.
When paying and leaving a tip the automatic tip total suggestion started too high. I don't know why places suggest a starting tip at 25%. Yes I understand the waiting staff may work for less than minimum wage and work off of tips, but that is a highly flawed system and should be abolished. The restaurant can and should pay these person's living wage and tips should be a surplus for exceptional service NOT an obligation of a patron. Making 20% off of a $65 bill for getting us water and some chips and walking 20 feet with our food to our table is beyond me. I wish I could make so much for doing to little in such a short time. You may call me cheap but the reality is there and if you have been a bar tender (who just opens bottle or can) or waiter you know this to be truth as well.
That being said... I did tip but not the recommended 20%. Only because I figured that the system has yet...
