This place is an experience you must have! It started when we’re driving by, and we could smell the fabulous bread smell half a mile down the road. We ran our errand, and then quickly headed back to eat here. It just smelled SO GOOD. Our waiter tonight was John C, and he was lovely. Fabulous attitude & funny guy. He gave us excellent customer service, even though the place was packed for their 2 for 1 happy hour. All the staff actually seemed to be working their butts off & paying attention to the details. After I ordered a vegetarian sandwich with a German potato salad, Desiree came out of the back to confirm— turns out the German potato salad I had read so much about (on the reviews) actually has bacon! So I switched that out for the American instead (which is vegetarian). She also went out of her way to find us a stray Carrot Cake cookie, since they appeared to be out, and my partner loves Carrot Cake and is allergic to nuts— so he can’t have the real thing. Everything we ate was wonderful. I was especially surprised by the Athena’s Gift sandwich. It’s a gluten-free, raw vegan sausage with cashew cheese. I didn’t expect a fake-sausage to be cold, but other than that I loved it. The seed bread was impressive too— normally that kind of thing tastes or feels like cardboard, but it was soft & delicious! In addition to the case of fresh desserts, they also have lots of retro candy! I was thinking of stocking-stuffers when we bought our Grateful Dead bar. They also have PEZ dispensers (is that showing my age?), Bottle Caps, Oreo Candy Canes, etc. For dessert I had an Italian Lemon Crème cake & the Vegan Mocha Love. The Lemon Crème was fluffier than it looked— like angel food cake and lemon cheesecake. The Vegan Mocha had coconut, which was unexpected, and had a nice coffee-like chocolate flavor. So many fun details here. Each table has a different country map on it & they have an old-style airport flip board that displays different quotes. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and we will definitely be back!

Wanted to give the Cafe 5 🌟 but a few things caused this 4 🌟 rating. First parking is a challenge with only 1 handicapped space and little side street parking can cause you to search for a spot. Seating is good as is atmosphere and were well served by Sherry our server who was attentive all evening. Menu is a European mix and I chose the German Sausage Sampler with German Potato salad, sauerkraut (could have been given a bit more) and pretzel bread $10.50 which could have been a 5 🌟 except for the German Potato Salad which needs to be changed so 4 🌟. Bill ordered a cup of the Beer Cheese Soup with Pretzel a sure 5 🌟 winner at $3.95. His Entree was the Ruben Special with American Potato Salad $10.25...sad to say that Potato Salad also needs changing so it too became a 4 🌟. Look for free Entree Coupon in local Mint or Money Magazines as we did. Also they do offer a 10% Veteran discount which isn't posted but a nice and thanked offering. Speaking of offerings they offer over 100+ types of beers for on site consumption and off site purchase. This is a great stop in place and we will surely be back trying other sides of Cole Slaw or additional sauerkraut as opposed to the Potato Salads.

Waiter was eager and pleasant but a bit, maybe I'll say, forgetful (tried to talk another diner about my soup, didn't remember who ordered which sandwich, forgot one of our desserts... just some minor things all rectified quickly). There were 4 of us including a child. We ordered the beer cheese soup w/pretzel stick: interesting flavor, delicious, pretzel was soft and went perfectly with the soup; muffuletta: was very tasty and large enough to share, olive salad was a little sparse and the bread was just okay (to be fair, no muffuletta can compare to Central Grocery in NOLA in my opinion, soooo...); PB&J club with grape jelly (my 9yo niece's favorite item on the menu... she LOVES this sandwich): 3 slices of white bread with the right amount of peanut butter and grape jelly; roast beef sandwich w/horseradish: great amount of meat and cheese; and Princess Anna... all served with plain, wavy potato chips and a pickle spear. We got a slice of cheesecake and a slice of carrot cake (nothing to write home about) to-go. Pleasant atmosphere, pleasant, helpful staff. Great neighborhood eatery overall. Hope to go back and try more menu items.

Date 8/28/22 Time of Dine in 8:14pm

I’m giving this Café 3 Star’s simply because it is clean and the customer service is fairly good.

I read the reviews which is why I chose to take my fiancé here.

I’ve never questioned the quality of so many peoples palate’s until now.

The French Dip wasn’t impressive by any stretch, my taste buds weren’t dancing, my mouth wasn’t radiating with joy and that’s what I expect from everything I eat, at every place I pay to eat or else why would I pay?

If I’m capable of producing a mouth watering, savory French Dip at home versus what a restaurant sells, it eliminates the desire to eat at that restaurant.

The bread on the French Dip wasn’t toasted, The Roast Beef didn’t have any seasoning or flavor nor was it cooked it was all cold.

I’ve never eaten a French Dip that was cold and bland like that.

Everything was mediocre with the exception of the staff, the waitress was super sweet and kind, the cashier courteous welcoming and kind.

If I was the owner, I would make some changes to how you prepare the French Dip, that’s the only thing I can give my opinion on because that was the only real disappointment.

Would I return? Maybe if I was limited on options and I wanted to grab a drink, I would maybe be able to work up the bravery to explore another dish however one dish from a restaurant or cafe reflects all other food options on its menu.

I apologize if this offends anyone, I just want to give my most authentic perspective and give my most...

I often go to the location on Riverside, and the staff there is wonderful... This was my first time at the san Jose location Today I showed up and not only was the service dismissive and shitty the moment that they saw that came with a laptop and a service dog. A friend came in to say hi and within 30 seconds a server approached us and told us that unless he buys something, he needs to" get off her table " ( I had already bought something and he was asking me questions as I packed up ) . There was nobody looking for a table and plenty of tables around. I did buy something and was packing up my bag to leave anyways But the entire time I was there I was treated disrespectfully by the staff. I asked for creamer for my coffee three times, and when I finally asked someone who wasn't my server, she rolled her eyes at me and told me she would tell my server. Who never brought it... Which I can only assume is because I stayed at a table to work for a couple hours while I waited for a client to respond. It is common that I stop by a coffee shop and I often tip really well but this time they did not get a large tip due to the lack of respect for me and my friend. I will never be returning to...
