I’ll admit that the day I visited, I was in a rush. I specifically came in to order the Cuban sandwich, which was an old favorite before becoming vegan and later gluten free. The atmosphere was lovely, and the human who prepared my food was wonderful. I could see sitting at the bar having a leisurely meal with friends or solo while reading/working or chatting with the staff. (If I hadn’t been in a rush I would have stayed to chat.) That said, I will definitely visit again when I have more time and try some other offerings.
I loved that they have gluten free bread available, but most of the sandwiches have wheat meat style slices. Unfortunately, this was the case with my Cuban, but I will say that for maybe the 5th time in the 8 years I’ve been gluten free I said screw it. I got the sandwich on the gluten free bread (because I may walk a little on the wild side, but I’m not reckless as I knew more than that and I’d definitely feel it later). I had the sandwich hot pressed, and I split it with Stephen. It was delicious and tasted very much like I remembered a Cuban tasting. However, I would rather stick to the truly gluten free options so I probably won’t get it again. My side was the potato salad, which was delicious, but spicy so I could only eat a few bites. However, Stephen devoured it along with the 1/2 a Cuban. The black cherry limeade I had was very good.
Looking at the menu, I didn’t ask about the thot dogs, but my guess is they’re probably also wheat meat. Of the sandwiches, it looks like I could get 3/5 of them on gluten bread otherwise as is, so I’ll give them a try. There are quite a few smoothies and juices, but I tend to go places for the variety of gluten free vegan options. I’ll be back next I’m in town, and I’ll stay a while this time while I try something new. (If I was not also gluten free this would be an amazing option.)
FYI: While I am gluten free by choice due to Hashimoto’s disease, it’s not much of a choice because without it I have insomnia (and I preferring sleeping). Cross contamination does not impact me personally, but be aware that this is not a gluten free establishment if you have...
Read moreFirst time at The Walrus in Murray Hill. Not a vegan but definitely enjoyed the atmosphere & actual sandwich. This this Vegan Turkey on ciabatta - I really loved the walnut pesto. Not pictured, we also ordered a Vegan Club & Electric Banana Smoothie. I would have been really happy but the service was subpar which kind of spoiled it. Despite being first to the bar, the bartender took 3 other orders of individuals who has just walked up before taking ours. When she finally got to us, she got a little lost in the order which is fine. My boyfriend & I are both industry & really understanding. Being Venezuelan, English is his second language & when the bartender was lost he tried to help by pointing to the different items on the menu we wanted thinking it was his English she couldn't understand. She rolled her eyes at him and said "I know where that is on the menu." I thought that was really distasteful. I tried to explain he wasn't trying to be rude but she seemed disinterested from there. I'm ok with slow food and understand that it does take time, however, my boyfriend's smoothie came out after he had already finished his sandwich. I also came back a second time to order another drink and the same bartender made direct eye contact with me 3 to 4 times and walked past before acknowledging me or asking if I had been helped.
I hope that she's just new to the biz but I'm definitely still willing to give this growing bar a...
Read moreWas quoted $3 for a single domestic beer with a group, and then was charged $4. Tried to explain that we were already quoted $3 and they replied “when was the last time you bought a beer for $3?” And did nothing to remedy the situation after all of us racked up a tab. (Btw the place I work at sells the same beer for $2.54 after tax). The owner was rude to me and said sexist and racist remarks so I felt obligated to review the place. Even though they push a “safe space”. It’s safe for whoever they choose apparently and isn’t equal. Lastly, the owner when trying to talk with them, they quickly threatened to kick me out if “I didn’t like it”. I told them that’s no way to treat patrons, and they replied “you expect we owe you something just because you bought drinks here”. Not professional and not a way to build a business.
Reply: They definitely did. And It was Alex, who said they were the owner. And they said “must be nice to be a cis white man” in front of other customers and embarrassed me for several people to see. Right before they threatened to kick me out. I feel There’s no reason EVER bring up someone’s skin color or gender in a conversation, especially with a stranger. Maybe Alex only pushes the safe space thing for trans or black people?…. but it definitely seems clear that cis white straight people are at the bottom of their list. And As far as the beer prices go we were quoted the $3 price...
