First, I have lamented for years about not having an Indian restaurant nearby. One of my most favorite places to eat while living amongst 2.271 million people, was a tiny little vegetarian restaurant called Amma's Kitchen. Since moving from the city, I have enjoyed the "approved" cultural fare locally, but it doesn't offer much beyond specifically Mexican cuisine. I don't know why I haven't tried Rice and Spice until today, (other than my worry to be let down again after the failed attempt of Sabor Cubano) and wow was I missing out. I ordered take out, and went with a classic Buttered Chicken, Indian yogurt (Raita) and Garlic Naan. I wasn't offered the option of spice level at my online checkout, and the dish came essentially a "0." I assume there is an option while dining in. The curry was delicious, chicken was super tender. Raita and garlic Naan was exactly as I like it. (Though the Naan was a smaller portion that what I am used to receiving.) I was surprised to see a portion of plain Naan came with the order, as well as their versions of the usual chutney condiments. The portion of rice and curry was huge! I'll have enough for another 2 meals! Definitely check this place out! (And to the owners, if you ever decide to do an option of malai kofta, please...
Read moreI'm so happy there's a Punjabi restaurant here!
Our order was placed online at 4:37 with a pickup time of 5:45. We arrived at 5:46 but had to wait until 6:06 to actually receive our order.
We ordered the "platter" meal where you get one meat dish, two veggie dishes, and a small plain naan. (Seriously, all Indian restaurants should do that!) We each selected the butter chicken, aloo gobi, and palak paneer. We also got an order of garlic naan and tamarind chutney. The total was $50.98 after 20% tip.
The butter chicken and rice were solid. Hot, flavorful, and tasty. There wasn't much chicken in it, but what was there tasted good and was good quality meat.
The aloo gobi and palek paneer were both exceptionally good! The palek paneer was very full of cheese chunks. The spinach tasted excellent and the spice level was perfect. The cauliflower and potatoes were also excellently spiced. I'll be craving both of those dishes!
The garlic naan, plain naan, and chutney were disappointing. The garlic naan had great flavor, but was completely solid. I don't like my naan to crunch. The plain naan was the right texture, but the flavor wasn't satisfying. The chutney was extremely watery and too sour for my taste.
Overall, will...
Read moreThe food here was bursting with flavor. Amazing herb and spice fragrance. I visit Jasper a few times a year for work, and I'll be visiting this restaurant each time I am in town. I wish they were in my neighborhood!
I read through reviews and noticed someone said the food needed salt, and this made me nervous because I don't use a lot of salt so it made me think the food could be bland - wrong! There's salt and pepper on the table, but in my opinion the seasonings were fantastic and adding more salt would have taken away from the feast of flavors. I'll never understand why people think they need more salt, but I digress.
Ambiance is clean and casual, feels family owned (always a good sign in my opinion), and the hosts were friendly and let us sit and talk without rushing us for the check. We just paid at the counter when we were ready.
The Paneer Tikka Masala was a slightly different color than the one I usually get back home and I loved every bite of it. Sad that I have to come all the way to Jasper from the west coast to enjoy it again!
This place is a gem. They would be busy and crowded if they were in Vegas or...
