Gorilla Sushi โ A Hidden Gem in Jefferson Park
Gorilla Sushi in Jefferson Park has quickly become one of my go-to spots for Japanese cuisine, and for good reason. This small, unassuming restaurant delivers big on both quality and atmosphere, offering an experience that rivals some of the cityโs more established sushi spots. The decor is simple and understated, allowing the food to take center stage. Seating is limited, so itโs wise to arrive early or be prepared for a wait during peak hours, but I assure you that the experience is worth every minute. The staff is friendly, welcoming, and attentive without being intrusive, making every visit feel comfortable and relaxed.
The menu at Gorilla Sushi is extensive and diverse, catering to all kinds of sushi lovers. From traditional nigiri to inventive signature rolls, the variety here is impressive. I especially enjoyed the โGorilla Roll,โ which is as bold in flavor as its name suggests. It combines a perfect balance of spicy tuna, avocado, and eel sauce, creating a savory profile that is simply unforgettable. Another standout is the โVolcano Roll,โ served warm with baked scallop and crab. The portion sizes are generous, and each roll feels like itโs crafted with care and precision. The fish tastes incredibly fresh, as if it were sourced daily, and the chefs know exactly how to highlight each ingredientโs natural flavors.
Beyond the sushi rolls, Gorilla Sushi has an excellent selection of appetizers and entrees. The miso soup is rich and comforting, with a depth of flavor that sets it apart from the average bowl. I also tried their tempura, which was perfectly crispy without being greasy โ a rare feat that speaks to the skill in their kitchen. For those seeking something heartier, the bento boxes are a great choice, offering a variety of flavors in one meal. The ingredients in every dish feel thoughtfully chosen, and each plate is artfully presented, making the experience feel elevated without being overly formal.
One aspect that deserves special mention is the value. In a city where sushi can often be quite pricey, Gorilla Sushi offers top-notch quality at a surprisingly affordable price point. The lunch specials are particularly attractive, providing a good amount of food without breaking the bank. This combination of quality and affordability is rare in Chicago, especially for sushi, and it makes Gorilla Sushi a standout for anyone looking to enjoy delicious Japanese food without overspending.
In conclusion, Gorilla Sushi in Jefferson Park is a must-visit for sushi enthusiasts. The quality of the ingredients, creativity of the menu, and excellent service all make it a memorable dining experience. Whether youโre a sushi purist or looking to explore something new, this spot has something for everyone. With its relaxed atmosphere, delicious food, and reasonable prices, Gorilla Sushi is a hidden gem thatโs well...
ย ย ย Read moreI am posting this review today not because I want to because I have to. Before I say anything, let me just you Gorilla Sushi that I have been coming to this location with my wife for years. This year alone we have visited this located 9 times and thus far, todayโs service left us shocked. Do you not even recognize your own regular customers? We ordered about 9 dishes total and a drink. We ate everything and only strongly disliked the taste, smell, and texture of ONE of the sushi - the spicy tuna sushi roll. My wife politely asked the waiter to exchange for a new one or something different, the water went to ask the manager in the back and came back with a SORRY, NO we can not exchange it. I said that is fine and we asked you to at least take it back as we wonโt eat it. Please bear in mind, the roll was $3.95 ONLY and out of the 6 pcs we only ate 2 (one each). Anyways, the waiter took it bad and said OK when my wife said to please take it back and remove it from the receipt if you have added, and you said OKAY and took the dish away. Everything was going great until we got the receipt. My total was around $50 and my wife noticed the spicy tuna sushi roll was still on the receipt and pointed it out the waiter. She just stood there staring at her dumbfounded and after a few moments said, โ oh well, you ate the 2 pcs so we can not remove it nowโ. Look, we donโt mind paying the $3.95, it wonโt break my bank for sure. However, this is about dishonesty and complete lack of accountability on their end. We are always giving you, and have given you so much business and loved coming here even though the drive is an hour long coming from the NW suburbs. But you didnโt care at all. My wife didnโt fight or argue at all, just quietly said โok, I will pay that is fine, but this is not how you do business.โ I have so many pictures from the many times we have been here, but wonโt be posting it at the moment. I just want to say, todayโs experience was horrible and disappointing. So disappointed that after coming for years, we are never going to come back again. I also want to mention that $3.95 isnโt a big for a business like yours and you could have easily just done a simple exchange when we initially asked for it, but you decided to deny and argue about it. Last but not the least, when we decided not to tip for the first time ever, after tipping generously every time- the attitude from the male waiter was UNBELIEVABLE!!!! He pushed my wife to the side and turned his back to us to clean the table in such an agitated manner, and then hurried us out! I could not believe my eyes! It wasnโt even busy as if they had to seat someone! The behavior is the FIRSTMOST reason I will never come back to this location again. Hope you are happy losing a customer. Rest assured, I will be letting my friends and family know as well. We will consider other sushi placed...
ย ย ย Read moreHave patronized this place so many times since they opened in my neighborhood. I used to like to dine in, but you always left smelling like fried foods, so I would leave my coat in the carโฆ so at least my coat wouldnโt smell. The last few times that weโve gone, they have had the worst music on the radio. Itโs always horrible fast techno dance music. Itโs such a small place and they have the music so loud that I feel like Iโm in a European disco. It is not conducive with eating a meal or relaxing and trying to enjoy your food. One time the only table that was available was in front of the small radio, I asked the staff if they could lower the volume, and they said no, they could not. The last time we went, we forgot about the music, and when we sat down, we realized that it was the same horrible loud music, we again asked the staff if they could change the music to something a little more appealing, and or lower the volume. Again they informed us they could not change the music or lower the volume and asked us if we would like our food to go. We wanted to eat in the restaurant, so we decided to stick it out and try to eat as quickly as possible. I even asked the tables that were sitting near us if they enjoyed this music, and they said no. I donโt know who in that restaurant likes, loud techno music, but this is not a nightclub!!! This is a sushi restaurant! Iโm sad because I used to love going there, their sushi is decent, Itโs not amazing, but for the price I did like it! But the loud music is a hard pass for me from now on. Iโll have to find a new sushi restaurant...
