Saw some negative reviews and wanted to clear up a few things. I live a block away.
They serve the best product of their kind in this whole neighborhood. (In a general sense, I can’t think of anyone else fusing Mexican and French cuisine like they are) How else do you explain the lines going way out the door? These folks serve incredible bread and pastries at a lower price than bougie places in other parts of Logan square and certainly compared to downtown. The people complaining about price either can’t tell the difference between good nutritious food and crap, OR they are comparing these folks’ prices to those of mediocre cafes. Like what the heck, have you never been to lakeview? Lincoln park? Most of them charge through the roof for lower quality product.
What I don’t understand is their prices for coffee are literally the same as all the other places and it’s fresher and BETTER. The sandwich prices are lower than what you’d usually find—we are living in times where outside of grocery stores, a sandwich under 10 dollars is a bargain. I just don’t get it. We are ok with “bougie”places charging top dollar for good or even just mediocre product but when minority owned businesses serving people who have lived in the neighborhood for generations want to be compensated appropriately for their great product we say “it’s too expensive.” The logic just doesn’t add up. Not to mention everything is huge.
For people saying they are slow I always see everyone working their assess off. If you are too entitled to wait for quality product then go eat fast food. They aren’t fast food and never claimed to be.
And as for the reviewer commenting about the skulls, this is honestly absurd. It’s a MEXICAN bakery. So they have MEXICAN folk art. Yes when I first saw it I was a little surprised, since I’m not Mexican, but that’s what happens when you experience other cultures. You see different things. If you find it off putting go to literally any other coffee place, don’t ask people to abandon their heritage and culture in their own neighborhood and call them...
Read moreI want to start out by saying that the food and pastries here are far and above the best in the city. I wish that they addressed their biggest issue which is how they manage their customers who are ordering. Nowadays you have to arrive by 740am to be able to o leave within an hour and that's insane!
Even though I did that , I was 15th in line, and it took them just shy of 40 minutes to get to me. They have one person taking orders while one owner is managing the register and other is doing online orders(I think). When you finally get inside to order it's pure chaos. Today tainted my experience. When you order, you can do 4/6/10 pastries to a box. I started with 6 and as I got closer to register I saw some additional pastries I wanted so I had the girl change my order from a box of 6 to a box of the 10. Easy right .just add 4, she grabbed another box to add the additional then I also ordered a cinnamon roll which is not part of the 10 (they have certain ones you can pick from). When I get to register, the owners is looking at the boxes and yells out to the girl and I explained that initially I ordered 6 then changed it to 10.
The owner, then proceeds to tell me that she will have to charge me 2 separate boxes, one for 4 and one for 6. The price difference is an extra 5 dollars (mind you that's the price of ONE pastry). I could have easily made a scene and said well then put it in one box of the 10. I didn't, I paid. However as someone who has been coming here for years, being a customer since pre COVID I was dishearten. This is not customer service. This interaction should have gone a different way. 5 dollars obviously doesn't make or break me, but it's the service. If you ladies invested in a more manageable system you would be even more profitable and have less disgruntled customers. It's a good thing your products are actually delicious, that's the only thing that has made this tolerable. However, moving forward, for me, this experience was enough to make me not want to come back. I'll find...
Read moreI’ve heard about this place MANY times but finally happened to be in the area when they were open so I stopped to check it out. It is DEFINITELY worth the hype! So much so that I went three times in two weekends! There are pros and cons that go with it so here goes: PROS: outstanding product! Despite the look of some of the pastries, they are not overly sweet and sugary. The selection has the traditional flavors (chocolate croissants, cinnamon rolls, etc.) and they’re great but this place shines with the unique items they offer. Mexican Street Corn croissants! Tres Leches croissants! Cajeta croissants! The Oaxacan taco bar! The CONS: VERY limited hours. They’re currently open on Saturday and Sunday from 8am until they sell out. POPULAR ITEMS GO FAST! Yes, there’s a line…sometimes very long. But despite some negative reviews I’ve never had anything but amazing interactions with the staff! I think too many complaints are from those that have never worked in food service. They are pleasant and helpful and never rush you. ADVICE: if you go early expect a line, even at opening. You’ll get the best selection. If you go later the line may be smaller but selection is sometimes very limited. Be patient, be flexible (I tried the regular chocolate cake just to get the deal on four items and was amazed at how delicious it was!) and be adventurous! When I go I feel like I’m part of a lucky group that gets to experience phenomenal...
