Two word summary. TASTELESS. SOGGY. Tasteless and soggy burritos, enchiladas and taco. Wet, mealy, unseasoned ground beef. Will not go back.
Went for the first time for lunch on Father's Day. From the parking lot I couldn't tell if the place was open. I poked my head inside the front door and saw a table of four just finishing up their meal, so we went on inside. We were seated immediately. Not a surprise since the place was almost empty. First off I went to the men's room to wash my hands. There was no running water and the paper towel dispenser was empty. Not a good start since a sign above the sink cautioned employees to WASH YOUR HANDS. Good luck with that.
Sanitation issues aside, we decided to try some food. As a starter, we ordered the queso blanco with ground beef. The salsa came to the table delivered in a small flask along with a basket of chips. The salsa was mediocre at best, thick but lacking in flavor except for a tomato paste and mild cilantro undertone. The chips were standard restaurant quality chips like ones you might find at Sam's Club.
My wife ordered the lunch special number 6 (chili relleno, enchilada and cheese quesadilla) and I ordered the lunch special number 3 (taco, enchilada and burrito). Both with a red sauce on top. The queso blanco arrived in a bowl. It was decent but not great. On a scale of 1 to 10 it rated around a 6-7. It was hot, gooey and not too greasy, but like the salsa, lacking in flavor. It was the tasteless ground beef that was its downfall.
Our meals arrived fairly quickly. By this time we were the only patrons in the dining area so it wasn't like the kitchen was slammed. The ground beef inside the burrito was the same as the ground beef inside the enchiladas, and the taco, and not surprisingly, probably the same as in the queso blanco. The ground beef was mealy, lacking in flavor, and it had an off-putting wet quality to it , like it had been laying in a tub of hot water in the kitchen in order to keep it warm.
The taco came with a corn tortilla as did the enchiladas. The burrito came with a flour tortilla. All tortillas were water logged, limp and gooey. The bland greenish sauce over top of the burrito, and the equally tasteless red sauce over the enchiladas did nothing to rescue them. They were disgusting.
Truly, I have had more flavorful Mexican dinners from the freezer section at Wal-Mart. While I can't speak for my wife, her comments to me about the chili relleno and cheese quesadilla she was served ranged from horrible, sloppy, and gross. Neither of us finished our meals. We will never go back.
For all of you who posted reviews in the 4-5 star range, I guess it all depends on what you're used to eating. If you have never had true Mexican cuisine, full of tender perfectly seasoned meats, spiked with robust flavors, and filled with spicy peppers, bright tomatoes, bold sauces, all served with crisp corn tortillas or fluffy flour tortillas, how could you know...
Read moreVery Good Mexican Food in Jenks! You can argue all day long about Tex-Mex vs. Mexican. The distinction is becoming so blurred doesn’t make much difference. The way restaurants mix things up anymore, the difference between the two can depend on which side of the plate you are talking about. There is the discussion of yellow cheese vs. white cheese, corn vs. flour tortillas, and cumin, chili powder, and chili peppers vs. none. For me, I break it into spicy and hot vs. mildly seasoned (or very little seasoning). My experience is that the food in most restaurants that promote themselves as traditional Mexican tends to be mild to very lightly seasoned with little to no heat from chili peppers, and they use mostly white cheese. There is the exception! If the menu item ends with “diablo” or “diabla” it may not be spicy, but it should have some heat to it! For my one time visit to Campesinos, based on the food we had and looking at the menu, their food tends to be on the mild, lightly spiced side of the Mexican food argument. We had the Pollo Asado and the Enchiladas Surpremas. The Pollo Assado was a thin, lightly seasoned chicken breast covered with a cheese sauce, mushrooms, bell pepper slices, onions and tomatoes. It was a very fresh, tasty meal. I went for the Enchiladas Surpremas, because I wanted to try the flavors of the various meats they serve. It was five enchiladas, (cheese, bean, ground beef, shredded beef, and chicken). They can be ordered with red sauce or grated cheese on top. I went with the cheese, so it wouldn’t cover up the taste of the fillings in the enchiladas. All of the enchiladas were good. The bean and cheese enchiladas didn’t have any seasoning at all and the meats were lightly seasoned. Even though I prefer the spicy hot Mexican food, I have to give Campesinos credit for serving quality, good tasting food. It is a clean restaurant, the service is good, the food is mildly spiced, and it served up hot and fresh! If you are looking for other Mexican restaurants in the area, check out my reviews in my collection "Jalapeno Highway" on Yelp. I've...
Read moreEven though Jenks is way out of our regular stomping grounds, we had occasion to be in the area around lunchtime, and the Yelp! reviews looked too good to pass up. We arrived and were seated promptly. Menus, chips and salsa also arrived promptly. Drink orders were take and delivered promptly. Sense a theme here? These guys were on top of the service. The menu is fairly robust, with mostly mainstream tex mex offerings, along with a few distinctly unique dishes. Not being up for a possible hit and miss on chili verde (I'm still sore over the last debacle), I instead followed the lead of a fellow Yelp!er and went with the pollo al queso, which is a delicious chopped, grilled, spiced chicken breast served under a generous dollop of queso, with the de rigeur rice and beans. Mine was outstanding. In fact I think my first words were "Holy S**t, this is good!" The Wife went with pollo asada, which was a thin, grilled chicken breast under peppers, onions and mushrooms. Essentially a variant on fajitas. It even came with tortillas if you wanted to go there. We had a queso order to start, to accompany the chips and salsa. ALL were good. The Wife even commented that even the Dr. Pepper was good. If I have anything to point out that could use improvement, it was the noise level. Only three booths were filled, and between the construction dudes in one booth, the ruckus the servers were adding, and the godawful music that was playing, the noise level was a little higher than I would like. We also sat right by the bar, and got to hear a lot of noise from bottles being thrown away, etc., which is why I never, ever, sit in a bar if I have a choice. All that aside, the food was awesome, service was great, and I found myself wishing they had a...
