Today around 2:15 PM, my colleague and I arrived at Cafe Alyce, excited to enjoy a nice lunch and kick off our spring break. We’ve been loyal customers for a long time and have always appreciated the food and atmosphere, but today’s experience left us feeling unwelcome and disappointed.
When we walked in, the server (a woman with blonde hair) told us we could sit at one of two specific tables, even though several others were clearly open. One of the tables had another guest’s jacket draped over a chair, which made it awkward to approach, and the other was uncomfortably close to a group of four. Wanting to enjoy our meal with a bit more space, we asked if we could sit at a table by the window that was unoccupied.
She immediately responded that we couldn’t sit there because the table was dirty. We politely asked if she could clean it so we could sit more comfortably, and she flatly said, “No, I’m busy and won’t have time to clean that table right now. That’s why I offered you those two.” Her tone felt dismissive and unwelcoming, which really caught us off guard.
We weren’t asking for anything unreasonable, just a clean, open table where we could enjoy our lunch without feeling crowded. But the way the situation was handled made us feel like we weren’t valued as customers. We ended up leaving because the energy just didn’t feel good, and it was honestly upsetting.
We were really looking forward to starting our break on a positive note, and instead left feeling disappointed. It’s unfortunate because we’ve enjoyed Cafe Alyce for a long time, but this experience makes us question...
Read moreWe’re new to the neighborhood and stopped in for a quick cider before our evening plans. The place was completely empty, but we were immediately told that we could only sit at one specific table right in front of the bathroom and front door, simply because we had a stroller. We usually prefer to sit outdoors when a place has outdoor seating but it was very chilly and we were with our baby so we wanted to sit indoors. We looked around at the empty space at all the other, better tables that had more than enough room for us. Not another dining guest in sight to bother.
As parents who alwayyyys go out to eat with our baby, we’ve never felt like our stroller was an issue before because we keep it as simple as we can for convenience. Our stroller is small and collapsible, and we would’ve gladly tucked it out of the way if given the chance but instead we were met with a tone that made us feel like an inconvenience from the start.
No high chair was offered, and when our ciders were brought to the table, they were opened and handed to us without glasses, with a casual, “Do you want glasses?” It was the kind of service that made us uncomfortable even asking for basic things.
We left feeling disappointed, like our presence wasn’t welcome. It’s disheartening to try and support a local business only to be met with cold service. For $17, we would have rather grabbed a pack of ciders from the corner store and enjoyed them at home. Unfortunately, this visit took all the charm out of what could’ve been a nice neighborhood spot. We’re not sure we’ll be giving it another try...
