I am very picky when it comes to restaurants, I believe you should get what you pay for. If I'm ordering Kobe beef I expect to pay for it, but I believe a lot of average restaurants are overpriced for the quality they put out. That said, I have eaten pho all over this city, even my favorite and very reputable Pho joint in Chinatown was disappointing last time I went (first time ever happened). There are about 2 MAYBE 3 Pho spots I would eat at in Houston... and as of today Pho 579 is def. one of them, I just hope they are consistently good. In my experience, when mom & pop are in the kitchen it's far better, and this is certainly true here. There were a couple of things that were disappointing, I ordered pate' on my banh mi, and there wasn't any at all, the bread looked dry, yet I'm sure I paid extra for it. The banh mi bread was not the best. It was a humid day, but it was lunch time (so bread should have still been fresh); however It really lacked that "something special" about banh mi, the super crunchy & flaky/messy outside, with the super light interior texture; but it could have been due to high humidity & rain in the air. The beef on the sandwich was actually flavorful and not overcooked, I also ordered the pork for later, so I tried a piece of the meat and it was too dry for my taste. I'd def. stick with the beef. I was a tad disappointed with the amount of meat for the soup compared to other shops, but the broth was hands down the 2nd best I've ever had (the best I've ever had is not even in Houston at all). I know in other reviews I've probably said this... but that's because I hadn't tried Pho 579, ha. Again, I really hope they are consistently this good with their Pho, so others can FINALLY figure out what REAL Pho is supposed to taste like... not just bones thrown into some water... there's a lot of spices that need to go into it, that most places miss. I can throw bones in a pot and let them boil for a day at home... don't need a restaurant for that. It's the nuances that make great pho, and these guys nailed it! The 2 final disappointing things were that they charge extra for take-away orders, and the broth was pretty darned cold, it wasn't due to the drive either, I literally had to heat the broth on the stove for nearly 10 minutes to a simmer boil using a crazy hot gas stove. If I hadn't the broth wouldn't have cooked the raw beef. Oh, and it did seem clean. All in all I will definitely be eating here again...
Read morePho 579 is the type of shop that you see yourself taking your parents to when you all have the day off. I was able to take my mother to this place a couple of times when I had a job, and I can confidently say that the staff are really accommodating. You can sit at a table, have a waiter/waitress arrive in less than 5 minutes, take your drink and food order (first the drink if you aren’t ready), then arrive with it in about 10-15 minutes.
After that, you might have to address a server walking past you if you need anything, my mother and I noticed that with the servers (they don’t do the whole checking on you every now and again thing).
Food was great, my mother and I order the six roll special (choice of rolls on the plate) as well as a large white meat (chicken) pho. I also get a Thai tea. All of it is great.
Also, it’s a bit cold in the restaurant so if you have a family member that is basically allergic to the cold (like my mother), then you’d need to bring a solid jacket. It might not hit you when you walk in but you might feel colder later into the visit. Overall, pretty...
Read moreI just left this place with my family & we didn't even get to eat. I've personally have been here plenty of times, been going for a long time. The pho is good but they never fail to disappoint as far as service. The last 4-5 times I've been here, my server has either forgotten our drinks or parts of our order. Even when he repeats the order back perfect, I'll still have something missing or wrong. It's usually the same server; don't know his name. I've been upset but yet I still come back with better hopes with this place. We walked out today. We came in there was maybe 2 -3 tables whom were already eating. The woman sat us down immidiately (she's great). There's more than one server so they aren't short staffed. He dropped our menus off and didn't ask if we wanted any drinks. He left us there for A little over 30 minutes. I've never had an issue the few few times I had an other server. This place is hit or miss. I've reached my last straw with this place. I always give them the benefit...
