A few of the sushi spots around my area happened to be closed on Sunday so my options were limited. Got on Yelp and this place popped up with some good reviews. So I had to check it out to see how good it really was.
In terms of design Umami is very modern and elegant. It doesn't over do it too much though. The interior is bright and spacious. Lots of warm tones and hardwood as the choice for dining tables.
In Umami, you walk up and order at the counter as if you were going to fast food restaurant. This is becoming a bit more common as I've seen lately. The menu is located on the TV screen that located above the menu. You have options for sushi rolls and nigiri. They offer entree dishes as well like teriyaki and hibachi style dishes too for those who don't want to eat strictly seafood. On top of all that they also offer some bubble tea options. The menu is a bit of hybrid to attract all sorts of crowds. Kind of felt a bit Americanized.
The sushi itself isn't too bad actually quite flavorful. The portions are kind of small compared to the offerings other establishments. Depending how hungry you are this may or may not fill you up. Also aesthetically the rolls were not the best looking as well. In terms of the bubble tea, it was a bit too sweet. Average at best and you definitely tell it's not their specialty.
Overall, it was a good experience. It's a great option for the area. Kind of out of the way for me though. The price is bit up there for the amount you get. The service is almost non existent after you get your food delivered to the table. The taste of the sushi itself was actually really good, still the look was not that impressive. In general it's good but not great. Compared to the competition it's about average. Still would...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis place has changed since we last tried it years ago. And I like supporting small businesses, but this one needs improvement.
We dined in. My wife had the teriyaki chicken with fried rice, and I had the tofu bento box, with fried rice. We also ordered vegetable tempura, and we both had unsweetened ice tea.
The iced tea tasted strange, so we immediately returned that. Although the refund was a bit challenging for the young cashier, I was appreciative that this was not a major issue.
The vegetable tempura was appropriately served before the rest of the meal. However, the batter they used was not a typical light tempura batter, so the experience was less than desired.
My wifeās meal came next. Served in a āto goā container, there was an abundance of fried rice, and a reasonable amount of chicken. The chicken (they highlight that it is all white meat) was pretty good. The vegetables were fairly bland, and the sweet carrots were too soft and too sweet. Note that their fried rice is just rice, no egg or vegetables mixed in.
A few minutes later, my bento box arrived. The tofu was small in piece size and quantity. And, unfortunately, it was way over cooked. The ginger salad dressing did not taste like ginger. It had a different flavor, perhaps of apple cider vinegar. The box contents were not well separated, so it looked more thrown together.
The ambience was a bit chaotic with some OK new age type music in the background, but the ownerās (or employeeās) children were playing their noisy toys at a table.
I hope this review helps the owner with areas to improve. ...
