The Chicken Coop Kitchen and Bar — Restaurant in Johnston

I’ve been a RI wings fan for decades, particularly boneless for the most part. Going way back to Wings To Go on Thayer Street (and the Chicken Coop was a Wings to Go years ago as well), to P.H.A.T. Wings in Providence (Admiral Street then Broad Street), to Wings and Things (Riverside and then Providence), to Boneheads (I still cry myself to sleep at night now that they permanently shut their doors), and the list goes on and on.

This location was Wings on 5 most recently, which was okay but didn’t have me traveling across the state to eat there unless I was in the area. I saw it changed over again, was still a wing spot, and decided to give it a go. Glad I did. Their boneless wings are near perfection. Perfect sized chunks that aren’t too small or too big needing to be cut. The lightly floured coating was just right, nobody wants to eat half a loaf of bread when they’re throwing down on some chicken. Some people say they like it hot. I’ve successfully passed a ghost pepper wing challenge (don’t do it, the pain is not worth it) and have been eating the hottest sauces for years, waiver or not. I don’t care to show off anymore, I like to taste the rest of my meal, but I couldn’t believe “Extra Hot” was the hottest a wing joint has to offer. Lo and behold, there’s a secret “Diablo” sauce not listed on the menu. I split a pound with half being Diablo and the other half mango habanero.

Fan-#@$%ing-tastic. I will definitely be returning here despite $19 plus tax and tip being a bit pricey for a pound of chicken, but if I’m in the mood, money is no object when it comes to boneless wings.

As an aside, I also ordered the cheese curds and my son ordered the mozzarella sticks. Just as good. The breading was light and crispy without being oily and the cheese was the perfect amount of melted while the overall texture was very satisfying.

If you love boneless wings and can stomach being in the Jersey Shore of Rhode Island, I highly recommend this spot.

Great place!!! Great food!!! Bartender was awesome and very personable. Never had an empty glass and was serving food in between. She was definitely spot on. It was nice to see someone working hard and smiling and laughing while doing it. I asked her opinion about items on the menu and she had a great recommendation which turned out to be amazing. The slider trio. A variety that gave me just what I was looking for. There were many other options that I will go back and try another time. I live local in Johnston and never realized what a great place I was missing this whole time. Even if I don’t have the time to get back there I will definitely be ordering to go so I can try more of what they have to offer. I had the chips which were delicious but a buddy had the fries and he let me get one. Absolutely delicious. Lastly., the coop sauce is where it’s at!!! I think they should bottle it and sell it like they do with hot sauce. It would pair well with many different foods guaranteed. I ordered via DoorDash so I can't speak to atmosphere. The service must be good because my food was hot, fast and accurate. The spicy/sweet chicken sandwich was large, tender & crispy and very delicious. I was worried it might arrive soggy but it did not. The takeout boxes they use are excellent for not over-retaining moisture. They put the lettuce, tomato and pickles off to side which was smart too. I was also pleasantly surprised at the sidewinder fries, cooked golden brown to perfection, nice and thickly potatoey. They even remembered to include ketchup for me. I've been dying to try this place and I was gifted a DoorDash card and I'm glad I tried them. I can't wait to sample some more items from the menu. My only wish is that food delivery orders are stapled closed instead of a tie just to ensure the meal is not tampered with. Thanks for a wonderful lunch!
