I have been to this buffet several times, and have also ordered carry-out. I will preface my review by saying that I recently moved to Kalamazoo from Grand Rapids, and have been spoiled by the Ming Ten buffet in Grand Rapids - so I may be a bit biased in my buffet expectations.
Overall, the food is pretty good, but nothing special. Here are my typical buffet go-to's, and how I would rate them at Hibachi Sushi Buffet: *Hot and Sour Soup - not amazing, but better than most. Not too thick and has that kick after a few bites without being overly spicy. *Crab Rangoon - again, not amazing, but better than the majority of buffets, simply because this place is almost always busy, so they are fresh, therefore not chewy from sitting out too long. *Sweet and Sour Chicken - exactly what you'd expect - breaded white meat chicken, and the sweet and sour sauce is also the standard that you'd expect. *Broccoli Chicken - not good. Broccoli Chicken has become my favorite chinese dish over the years, but theirs is lacking flavor, and the chicken is just weird. They must either boil or steam it, because it's just limp, lifeless, flavorless chicken. Disappointing. *Broccoli Beef - much better than the broccoli chicken, has more flavor. Texture is hit-or-miss - the longer it sits out, the chewier it gets. *Orange Chicken - awful, awful texture - I think they must over-cook the chicken. After every bite I have to spit a few parts into a napkin that are impossible to chew. *Fried Rice - extremely disappointing. No flavor, rice and vegetables are consistently undercooked. We ordered chicken fried rice for carry-out, thinking maybe it would be better if it were freshly prepared, and unfortunately that was not the case. They seem to use the same cooking method for the chicken as they do for the broccoli chicken, the chicken is actually white. *Noodles - (I have no idea what kind) exactly what you'd expect, satisfies my cravings.
The only consistently good chicken dish I have had here is the Honey Chicken - the texture and flavor are both good. However, this dish is not offered on the carry-out menu. The remaining chicken dishes are purely hit-or-miss it seems, they are never consistent.
A few dishes to try that are outside of my normal go-to's that stand out here are the pork dumplings and the Kung Pow chicken. They also offer more american dishes than most chinese buffets, I've seen everything from pizza to fried chicken to burritos to potatoes. They aren't incredibly delicious but I would imagine these dishes are nice to have for picky children.
The selection of toppings, fruits, and puddings at the salad bar is decent, but the lettuce leaves are ridiculously huge. It's like they pull the entire lettuce leaves off a head of lettuce and don't cut them into smaller pieces at all. Very impractical to eat.
Finally, the dessert bar is larger than most chinese buffets, but nothing to write home about. They do have scoop-your-own ice cream instead of the standard soft-serve machine, which is a nice touch, but the flavors are standard vanilla, chocolate, and usually one other option, and aren't quite as creamy and delicious as ice cream should be.
Overall, 3 stars is the perfect rating for this buffet. It's so-so. If you are craving chinese food, and want a buffet where you know the food will be fresh and not sitting out too long, this restaurant will satisfy your cravings. It has all the basics, and you will find a few stand-out dishes each time you go. But for me, I am still searching for...
Read moreDined at Hibachi Sushi Buffet with family at 4405 S Westnedge in Kalamazoo on 12/26. It was the worst experience of my life. The food was mediocre at best, and the men’s restroom was disgusting. When entering the bathroom I slipped and fell due to about an inch of feces drenched water that was covering the entire floor. I landed straight on my back hitting my head, twisting my left knee and hip. There was no wet floor sign or any indication that the bathroom had received any attention for some time. I alerted the manager (Magjie??) immediately of the incident and she came to the restroom to take a look, but refused to walk in stating the floor was too disgusting and they were having plumbing problems between the toilet and sink. I told her I wanted to fill out an “incident report” or get their insurance info in case a bodily injury were to come from this and she stated they don’t do that and handed me a piece of cardboard to document the incident. After giving her the cardboard stating what happened, I also showed and told her that my cell phone had been cracked when in my pocket due to my fall and I wanted to speak to the owner (Ken?). She said she had no way to contact him at the time but told me that he would. I’ve been back twice to see if I could speak to him and it’s been 4 days and still have heard nothing. My fall, or the damage to my phone should not have even occurred if it weren’t for their inexcusable negligence in maintaining a safe and operational restroom. It should not have even been in commission that day! I received no apology, no offer to pay for the cleaning of my clothes, or the repair of my phone. I’ve had back pain for four days. I just can’t believe how unconcerned they were about the whole situation. As we were leaving the manager pulled an employee from the sushi line to attempt at getting the restroom on order, in which he was not wearing gloves. I guess their janitor and sushi chef is the same person. If they can’t maintain a safe and clean restaurant it just makes me question what type of sanitary precautions they take with food prep. The manager and everything about the whole situation has been so unprofessional and negligent and I can’t believe I still have not been contacted by the owner. My ultimate recommendation is to steer clear of...
Read moreI give 1 star because there was endless supply of soda. Back when it was Stir Max it was always good food. Saying that I have spent a decent amount of money at this current one and it has been hit or miss but generally decent food. Here is why I am not going back.
1.) Watched the stock lady take old food from the pan and dump it onto new lettuce but without new food. For the next ones I get multiple plates so I can have a variety of food. 2.) The chicken for the sweet sour red sauce was rubbery. The sauce was normal. 3.) The black pepper chicken was hard and greasy inside. 4.) When I got my stir fry from the grill I had hair in it. The steak which is really thin was pink on the inside ( not sure how due to the grill being hot and it being thin) the broccoli was soft. 5.) The crab Rangoons were soft not crispy at all the cream cheese was thick and heavy. 6.) Seems like the only thing that I like was the salad which I made myself. 7.) The ice cream was not good either. By the taste of it it tasted frozen then thawed then refrozen, when you looked at it you could see crystals on it. I have had that happen to me so that's how I know how that can happen.
That was just my experience. The other 3 people in my group had maybe 2 or 3 things that they liked. 1 of them is 5 so try to tell him that he needs to eat is a joke when I am not enjoying my food.
So to sum all of this up I will not be going back and now that everyones stomach feels like crap, I will not recommended this place at all. Where I would recommend is a place in Paw paw exit 60 just a couple exits down from there. The food is always fresh it's smaller but in my opinion better because of the size. It's called Great China
If you have read all of this I am sorry it's long but this was my...
