My son and daughter-in-law recently bought their first house, and it happens to be just down the street from the owner of this establishment. My wife and I, along with our daughter and other youngest son, made the trip up from Arkansas to visit. They told us about this really neat old man up the road, who came down to greet them and tell them about the neighborhood. “He owns a restaurant,” they said. So this morning, we all loaded up and went there for breakfast/lunch. I just want to say, this place is good food….really good food. I mean really good food, but it’s so much more than that. It’s that small town restaurant, where everyone grew up, the one that no matter the color of you skin, the location of your house, the size of your bank account, or political beliefs you carry, you can go inside, and you will be home. And that is because the people this fine gentlemen has working for him will make you feel that way. I watched people from all walks of life sit at tables and enjoy their meals, while being attended to by a staff, who really treats everyone the same, special. Like I said, it was breakfast/lunch, and I can never turn down breakfast. And I judge every restaurant, which serves breakfast, by one dish. That is the biscuits and gravy. I had that, along with two eggs over easy, and it was amazing. I took one bite if that gravy, and I scraped my eggs right over the top of it. I then dug in and enjoyed one of the bests breakfasts I’ve had, outside some of the women who raised me. It was so good, I regretted not going deeper into the menu, to see what this place was all about. On our our table, there was eggs, biscuits and gravy, a cheeseburger, pancakes, chicken fried steak, and hot wings, and it was all eaten. I watched a woman next to me enjoy grilled catfish. Where else are you going to find that? And again, the food wasn’t the real star. It was the people who served it to you. The people who welcomed you in the door with a smile and barked an order to the kitchen in the same breath. Our waitress smiled the most genuine smile and talked to my twenty-three-year-old daughter, my wild child, as if she had known her since the day she was born. A swift-handed gentleman kept empty plates off of our table, often so fast, you were literally putting the last bite in your mouth, as he grabbed it. When we left, a waitress, who didn’t even wait on us, said goodbye to us, as she rolled silverware in napkins. But above all, this place was the wonderful man, who walked down the street, to welcome my kids to his neighborhood. He didn’t have to do that. Most people wouldn’t these days. But he did. When you find a place like this, operated by people like this, you go there. It’s doesn’t matter the prices on the menu, you go there. You support that business, because they would dang sure...

They respect the mask mandate here. The staff wear masks, and patrons are required to wear masks until seated. There are partitions between booths, and a partiton separating patrons from the register.
Comfortable booth seating, even if you’re fat. Okay, so, I’m fat. I don’t mean a little fat, I mean I have A LOT of potential (for all you chemistry/physics majors out there). I also hate sitting at tables. I prefer booths, because they give me a false sense of protection and privacy. (Don’t judge my psycho-social issues, just understand they exist.) There is nothing worse (when you’re eating out, that is) than getting to a booth and realizing that it was made for people who workout and run marathons and stuff. (Here’s looking at you Olive Garden.) It is my personal opinion, which is all this review is required to provide, that any restaurant with fixed booths should be put under new management. Booths should be made for everyone, not just toddlers and wasps. This place has booths made for everyone. At least, the booth I sat in was.
Service is extremely important in my opinion. I can love the food, be comfortable in the seats, and dig the atmosphere, but if the service stinks, I’m not coming back. The service here was on point. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable, prompt, and kept our drinks full. She also didn’t hover, smother, or interrupt. She had it together and was well-worthy of a healthy tip.
The place is old-school. It could use some updates. However, the music was excellent, the lighting was appropriate, and the tables appeared clean even though the windows could use some help. I would say that if you’re looking for fancy, don’t go here. If you’re looking for comfortable seating, good food and good service, go here. I didn’t notice any cockroaches or bugs apart from the obligatory flies, which always find their way into restaurant windows. I shooed the away, and they didn’t come back.
This was my first trip to this establishment. My kid had the catfish, mac n cheese, and spaghetti. I had country-fried steak, mashed potatoes, and cabbage. The cabbage was worth the trip. The country-fried steak was country-fried steak with delicious white gravy. The potatoes were legit. Good food. The catfish was amazing. My kid loved the mac n cheese, but she’ll eat just about any mac n cheese with pleasure. The spaghetti was not up to mark, but they can’t all be winners. We both had the rolls. They were dense, moist, sweet and fantastic. No butter needed.
I didn’t check the restrooms at this location, so I can’t help there. Bear in mind that this place was not busy when we were here. If you go when it’s busy, don’t complain if my review doesn’t fit your...
Read moreFirst of all I have not posted anything about any of the businesses that I've patronize in over 6 months possibly.
However I had to post about Niecie's Restaurant on Troost.
Let me start with the good qualities, there was a gentleman who greeted me at the door and offered me an menu and a sit the counter now he had excellent customer service and relations. The mashed potatoes and gravy was everything as well.
But then he turned me over to three of the most hatin' ratchet and very unprofessional clerks who acted as if I did something wrong upon entering the restaurant. I asked for smothered chicken, greens, and mashed potatoes. At the time of placing my order one of ratchet clerks let me know with attitude that the smothered chicken was normally a Tuesday specialty and by it being Friday the only thing that they could do for me was to take pieces of fried chicken and marinate them or shall I say saturated them in (gravy which was excellent). They advertise Southern cuisine/ food the greens were very salty and came out of bag or can totally not the true Southern way in my opinion. The chicken was some of the smallest pieces of chicken I had ever. Thank goodness the mashed potatoes were made with real potatoes but and yet again (saturated) in that delicious gravy. The killing part is while having my food rang up I noticed that one of the ladies looked familiar to me and sure enough we went to high school together. Nevertheless I won't be patronizing this establishment anymore because this is the second time patronizing this business having had about the same experience I am a black woman who loves nothing more than to patronize Black owned businesses however I expect and will only tolerate excellent customer service and professionalism the same experience white folks or folk with influence are treated with and as a valued customer especially where I spend my money. For anyone that knows me knows that I had to be left with disappointment and had to have been heartbroken to take time to critique any Black owned business publicly. Futhermore we as (Blacks)should treat one another with excellence because that's the only way we can expect everyone else to treat us with excellence. That's...
