If you are trying to have a nice peaceful meal away from the chickens, this is NOT it. **This review has nothing to do with the food or the service, just the fowl company they allow to frequent.
To preface, I am terrified of chickens, like jump into traffic if one is coming towards me scared. I understand it’s stupid… but it’s an irrational fear from being attacked on multiple occasions. I also understand the whole ”don’t come to Kauai if you don’t like chickens”. Yeah yeah, I get it but this island is amazing and the beauty is unmatched. So I’m facing my fear to experience the absolute stunning beauty of this island.
It seems like almost everywhere is a food truck and any table is overrun by chickens….. PLEASE STOP FEEDING THEM, it’s illegal and is subject to a $500 fine. We are guests on this island and shouldn’t add to a growing problem. I know I know, they are amusing but you are exacerbating the problem. You get to leave the island but the locals have to deal with the nuisance of the increasing populations.
Now back to this restaurant, it was the only dine in option that was open. All I wanted was a meal that I wasn’t sitting in the car for; a moment of peace where I don’t have to look over my shoulder for these demonic beggars and could just enjoy a cocktail or two.
We went into the restaurant and I immediately walked out after seeing a rooster walking around the dining room like he owned the place. My boyfriend was convinced it was a fluke because what type of place allows these disease ridden fowl to roam INSIDE THE RESTAURANT. He put our name in for a table anyway. We waited a half hour, going in and out of shops, dodging these foul/fowl beasts and witnessing tourists continually feed them. We came back once our table was ready. Luckily, no chickens in sight. But then they seat us and I look down and see fresh chicken poop on the floor. 🤢 I get that I am not a fan of chickens but to me this is considered a health and safety issue. Not only are these potentially disease ridden birds free roaming the restaurant they are pooping on the floor….. Gross right? Before ordering anything, I decided to ask the server how often chickens are in the restaurant. He said all the time and I decided that we should leave for everyone else’s sake because I would’ve absolutely lost it if a chicken decided to join our table. I personally prefer my chicken cooked and on a plate before it arrives at the table.
All in all, I didn’t try any food or drinks. I’m not sure how the service is but they seem very welcoming to all species. I would have loved to try this place but apparently this establishment has lost the battle to chickens. If you wanted to dine here to have a peaceful meal away from the begging chickens, this is not the place.
I don’t want to give a negative review because of my personal issues, but the poop….. that just doesn’t fly with me… Still, I wanted to give a heads up in case you are looking for a respite away from these feral birds. If you enjoy them, and don’t mind a little poo then this restaurant is probably...
Read moreVery disappointing. We went to the restaurant to celebrate our daughter's birthday. We'd been speaking about it for weeks as being the highlight of our trip. When we arrived we were told it would be a 40 minute wait. That was fine, we wanted to walk down to the beach. 15 minutes later while at the beach we got a call to say our table was ready, we said we were on our way. It's a ten minute walk back and we were told on arrival that our table was given away. We complained and he said it would take ten minute to seat us. Twenty minutes later we were seated, no apology and cutlery (forks only) we're just chucked our way. The server seemed more polite, we were hopeful. Unfortunately he didn't seem very capable either. He didn't bring one of our daughter's drinks, they were so excited to try the mocktails. It took two requests for a drinks menu and eventually asking another waiter before we received it..oh and some knives finally! We ordered her a drink at last and she received it half way through her dinner. I spent the time trying to get the waiter's attention, so my food was only marginally enjoyable. Food was ok, but not really worth the high price. Maybe we just had a bad taste in our mouths. He did manage to pull out a birthday dessert on request, but the kids were so tired by all the waiting, it was an anticlimax....
Read moreWe had a delicious dinner this evening at Kalypso. Everything was great from our appetizer of calamari to our entrees. The calamari was lightly breaded and tender with a good house made tartar sauce. I got the shrimp tacos which were excellent. The tortillas were charred perfectly and the shrimp were cooked well, not tough at all. The slaw was seasoned and a yummy cilantro cream was drizzled on top. The beans were good, the Spanish rice (typical) was bland. My partner got the NY steak and it was cooked perfectly, brought out on a sizzling cast iron. His sides were good, mashed potatoes and garlic sauteed green beans. We shared the chocolate lava cake for dessert, it was pretty good. My partner enjoyed his margarita. Service was good, our waitress seemed a little scattered, probably because they were busy. My partner's margarita sat at the bar for 10 minutes while she chatted with another table and she had to check in to recall what our entrees were after we'd ordered, possibly to assure us that they had been submitted to the kitchen and would be out soon. Definitely a place we will...
